A shooting at the Bestbet Orange Park cardroom in Jacksonville, Florida has left one person in a critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds according to local police.

Police responded to calls of gunfire in the car park at the Bestbet entrance at around 4.44pm on Wednesday and discovered a man with serious gunshot wounds.

The unnamed victim was rushed to a nearby hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries, though he managed to tell police that his armed attacker had fled the scene.

An Orange Park Police Department (OPPD) statement said:

“We can confirm the shooting is isolated and occurred in the parking lot of the business. There is no current threat to the community. This incident is still in the early stages of its investigation.”

A local news report that the man was shot inside the cardroom was later retracted, though players heard the shots and came outside to investigate.

Bestbet have made no official statement on the incident and games are believed to have restarted shortly after the police arrived to take control of the scene.

Cardrooms and casinos have been the scene of numerous shootings this year, ranging from personal disputes to armed hijacks.

Just last month, two men and a woman were shot in the parking lot of the Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino, all surviving the attack.

In September, a man was shot and killed after attempting to stop an armed robbery at the Capitol Casino in Sacramento, the third such incident at the casino in just three years.

The Hustler Casino in Gardena, California, home of the infamous Robbi Jade Lew/Garrett Adelstein “cheating” scandal, was hit by armed robbers in August.

The same month saw an Oregon tribal casino targeted by an armed robber, the gun-wielding suspect and a bystander both injured as police swooped on the Wildhorse Resort and Casino.

This year is not special when it comes to such incidents as casinos and cardrooms have long been a tempting target for would-be robbers, with poker players regularly caught up in such attacks.

Poker pro Joe ‘JoeySal’ Salvaggio had his Main Event buy-in robbed from him at gunpoint in the carpark of the Rio in Vegas during the 2019 WSOP.

The Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida was targeted by a gunman, as were the Aquarius Casino Resort and Golden Nugget casinos in Laughlin, the gunman shot and killed by police in the latter case.

A robbery at the Bellagio saw the suspect shot dead after a gunfight with Las Vegas police outside the casino in 2019.

49-year-old Las Vegas resident Michael Charles Cohen had previous convictions for bank robberies, as well as arrests for kidnapping and carjacking.

Cohen was the prime suspect for a 2017 armed robbery, also at the Bellagio, which happened within feet of Doyle Brunson playing poker…
