Sherkin can back up festival win
Another one-two yesterday as we missed out on the double again with a winner and a second. The duo for Tuesday are both running at Galway, and we select two trainers with a particular affinity for the track.
Dermot Weld, long-time King of Ballybrit, sends out Sherkin Island in the Rated Race at 16:30 as a 4/1 chance. I thought she would be a little shorter in the betting.
The improving filly won a CD maiden earlier in the summer in fairly comfortable fashion, and she has a good draw this afternoon to repeat the tactics and take a handy position – crucial for Galway as they head into the straight.
Times suggested the ground was quick from her victory, a surface that seemed more amenable following her debut in heavy conditions at the Curragh. She was matched at 1.051/20 in-play when finishing third on that occasion as the test of stamina, allied with the taxing surface that proved too much. Her best trip will be a 1m.
She holds a Group 3 entry later this month and her trainer has enjoyed most success with his 3yo turf runners this term.
Mullins could have an exciting newcomer
Willie Mullins cleaned up at the Galway festival and the champion trainer is back at Ballybrit with the 10/11 Sportsbook favourite Shewearsitwell – a mare who holds an outstanding chance back on the Flat.
She looked a very exciting prospect when making all at Ballybrit last summer, winning a bumper by a substantial margin from the front. She looked very professional when she made the running and received a lovely controlled ride from the front that day from Patrick Mullins. She also saved a bit to kick for home with a burst of acceleration.
The tight turns of Sligo proved no problem on her first start over hurdles, and she subsequently landed the Grade 3 Joe Mac Novice at Tipperary the last time she was seen on the track.
Good ground suits and she appears to have enough pace for the step back to 1m4f for her debut Flat run this evening. Her nearest market rival Little Bubbles has also set the pace in two seconds next to her name, but Shewearsitwell could win that particular battle and outstay her.
