Cade Hits His Assists

Cade Cunningham has gone over 3.5 assists in his last three games, averaging six per game in that span. Cunningham is averaging 8.2 potential assists on the season, putting him just behind DeMar DeRozan and Kevin Durant.

The first overall pick has quickly gotten up to NBA speed after a delayed start to his rookie campaign. Although yet to be reflected in the numbers, Detroit’s offense looks better with Cunningham on the floor, and his ability to dictate the tempo and pick out teammates has already been evident.

The opponent causes some doubt here. Detroit faces the Golden State Warriors and their league-leading defense on Friday night. The Warriors, though, are on the second night of a back-to-back after an arduous matchup with the Cavs.

Woeful shooting is a greater concern. The Pistons are dead-last in field goal percentage and historically bad from the three-point line. We are relying on Cunningham’s teammates converting the good looks he creates for them.

It’s just such a low number that it’s impossible to resist even at short odds, though. He’s cruised past this recently.

  • Pick: Cade Cunningham over 3.5 assists (-158)

Cole Anthony Keeps Shooting

Cole Anthony is taking 16 shots per game this season. That’s more than Jimmy Butler, Nikola Vucevic and James Harden. Anthony’s average is up at 17.6 field goal attempts per contest over the last eight.

Orlando is letting him run the offense. Even when he’s ice-cold, the shots are flying up – he took 21 despite hitting just five of them against the Knicks last time out. All of these shots are leading to Anthony averaging just under 20 points per game, and he’s scored over 19.5 in four of his last six games.

His true shooting has leapt from under 50% last season to almost 56% in 2021-22.

This Magic team is bad, and they are at risk of a blowout against the Nets, who have been surprisingly good on defense. What we’ve seen from Orlando and Anthony, though, suggests he’s still going to have plenty of opportunities to score the ball.

There are weak points in Brooklyn’s perimeter defense for Anthony to attack off the bounce. He’s averaging 21.8 points per game over his last eight.

There’s value in backing the over here. Pairing his improved efficiency with the volume he’s enjoyed of late makes it an easy route to 20+ points.

  • Pick: Cole Anthony over 19.5 points (-106)
