Here’s everything you need to know about the launch of mobile sports betting in New York.

The 4 New York Sportsbooks Offering Online Sports Betting

While the DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook have been operating in New York for two years now, bettors were required to travel to the retail locations to place their wagers in person.

These retail locations are no longer the only option now that online sports betting has launched, and two more sportsbooks will be joining DraftKings and FanDuel today.

Five more sportsbooks are expected to launch in New York soon, including BetMGM, PointsBet, Bally Bet, WynnBet, and Empire Resort.

The Path to New York Online Sports Betting – How We Got Here

The journey leading up to the launch of mobile NY wagering has been long and winding, but bettors are thrilled that it’s finally ended.

Here’s a timeline with some key events leading up to the launch of online New York sports betting:

November 2020: New York Senator Joseph Addabbo estimated the Empire State has been missing out on $1 billion every year without mobile wagering. Senator Addabbo was a key figure in passing Senate Bill S17D, the piece of legislation that ultimately legalized online NY sports betting.

April 2021: NY state legislators passed the state budget bill for fiscal year 2022, paving the way for online and mobile sports betting. This allowed the New York State Gaming Commission to initiate a bidding and approval process for sportsbook operators.

August 2021: Sportsbook platforms began applying for online sports betting licenses in New York.

November 2021: Nine sportsbook operators were awarded online sports betting licenses from the New York State Gaming Commission. The New York State Register also published an official set of rules and regulations for these betting sites to follow.

January 8, 2022: Online New York sports betting officially launches across the Empire State.

The New York Sports Betting Market Is Ready to Explode

Now that mobile New York sports betting is available, the Empire State has a chance to become the center of the sports betting world. With over 20 million residents, New York is now the most populous US state with regulated online sports betting.

Factor in the 10 pro sports teams from the big four leagues that play in New York, and there’s little doubt the Empire State will take over the US sports betting market. More sportsbooks are eager to get in on the action, including Barstool Sportsbook, Fanatics, Bet 365, and FOX Bet to name a few.

It will be intriguing to watch how the New York sports betting scene develops over time, and we’ll be following all the developments. Stay tuned to Sports Betting Dime for the latest news on sports betting in New York and other states as they go online.
