Samuli Sipila Wins His Second Title of 2024 PGT PLO Series

Samuli Sipila is now the clear leader in the festival-long points race at the 2024 PGT PLO Series after winning his second title in the span of a few days. The Finnish poker pro has now cashed for $434,140 in prize pool payouts across three in-the-money finishes, the most of any player to this point.

The Finnish poker pro backed up his win in the standard $10,100 pot-limit Omaha tournament for $240,300 on Mar. 24 by taking down the $15,100 progressive bounty event. He overcame a field of 74 entries in the high-stakes PLO knockout affair, earning $159,840 from the main prize pool and $239,000 in bounty payouts.

Sipila now has more than $1.2 million in lifetime tournament earnings to his name, with more than a third of that total having been earned within the past few days.

In between his two victories, Sipila also recorded a seventh-place finish in another $10,100 PLO event. He now has 544 total PGT points earned this series, which is nearly twice as many as second-ranked Dylan Weisman (277) heading into the final few tournaments of the festival.

This event ran over the course of two days inside the PokerGO Studio at ARIA Resort & Casino Las Vegas. The top 11 finishers made the money. Six-time bracelet winner and PGT PLO Series event no. 3 champion Daniel Negreanu was knocked out in sixth place ($33,300 and $31,000 in bounties) by Sipila to bring day 1 to a close.

After scoring that knockout, Sipila entered day 2 with nearly half of the chips in play. It took him just a couple of hours to convert that lead into the title. He knocked out every single opponent on his way to hoisting the trophy, starting with Sean Winter (5th – $46,620). Bracelet winner Christopher Frank (4th – $63,270) was the second-largest bounty earner of the day with $46,000. Sipila’s pocket aces held against the top pair of four-time bracelet winner Nick Schulman (3rd – $89,910) to give him just better than a 2:1 chip lead going into heads-up play.

Three-time bracelet winner Jim Collopy mounted an early comeback, winning a big pot with a full house of Sipila’s nut flush to overtake the lead. Sipila soon doubled back, though. Collopy turned one pair into a bluff on the river in the key hand, but ran into a straight for Sipila.

In the final hand the two contenders limped to a flop of A85. Collopy checked with QJ86 and Sipila bet 100,000 holding 10432 for a flush draw and a wrap. Collopy called and the 10 rolled off on the turn. Collopy checked and Sipila bet 380,000. Collopy check-raised all-in for 1,410,000 and Sipila called, having picked up a pair of tens to go with his draws. The 5 on the end improved neither player and Collopy was eliminated in second place ($159,840). He also earned $3,000 in bounties.
