Want to improve your tilt control? Improve your discipline, so says Raise Your Edge founder Bencb.
When we talk about mindset as it relates to poker, one of the most common areas that we touch on first is tilt, because it can be so detrimental to your long term success. A player who goes on tilt very easily and frequently will have a very difficult time remaining profitable at the tables, even if they are an accomplished player. Tilt can take many forms and looks a bit different for every individual, however there is one common reason behind many player’s tilt that drives the action. Today we’ll briefly break down why having a lack of discipline is the main contributor to tilt, and go over some action steps you can take to combat it.
Lack of discipline
Whether we’ve been one outered, outplayed, or even just on a downswing, tilt can corrupt our brains and take the steering wheel away from even the most hardened professional at times. You can know the perfect decision for every spot imaginable, but when that guy who one outered you enters the pot you still want to 3-bet the 8-5 suited right in his face! Most of the time when we are in these moments we simply do not have the will to fight these emotions any longer and stick to our cohesive poker game plan.
The definition of discipline can vary, but in this case let’s think of it as the ability to overrule emotion. When you feel an emotion that is negative or counteracts your goal, you must either succumb to the emotion or find the discipline to move forward anyway. With any pursuit in life you will get farther if you have the discipline to do what needs to be done whether you feel like it or not. We see examples of the need for discipline everywhere. In our jobs, our families, our relationships, our health and fitness.. There is nothing that cannot be done if we have the discipline to keep going. The problem is, so many people get trapped in the cycle of fickle emotions that they lose sight of the bigger picture.
Accept your emotions, they are a part of you. Emotion is good, it means you’re a human being. However, you have to recognize that being controlled by your emotions is not going to get you very far in poker. Poker is an extremely complex strategic game that requires you to make the most profitable decision possible, whether or not you feel like doing so. If you want to play for fun by all means let emotion guide you, but if you want to make a career or side hustle from playing you will have to get your emotions in check.
Discipline is a muscle
Many poker players today have a severe issue with discipline that can have a lasting effect on their poker results. Think about it, freedom to do what you want is the main reason a lot of people become poker players in the first place. Rejecting the discipline that is forced upon us by a regular job we turn to a career where we can just play a game whenever we want. Rejecting the discipline to play correctly comes just as easily when those tilting emotions take over, often leaving us sitting in the car with zero dollars wondering what happened. Rejection and even despise for authority figures is actually a very common trait in poker players, and with this often can come an underlying lack of discipline. This makes keeping your cool at the table that much harder.
If you’re looking at taking poker very seriously and making a career or a side hustle from it, start looking for ways to exercise your ‘discipline muscle.’ Every time we force ourselves to do something productive that we really don’t want to do, our discipline is strengthened a little. Work to improve other areas of your life outside of poker and it will also help you maintain perspective through those rough sessions. When poker isn’t the entire focus of your life you’ll also be able to take bad beats a little less seriously and focus on the other areas of your life that are going well. Join a gym and stay consistent with your workouts, take up a new skill like playing the guitar, or even just spend consistent time with loved ones and family. Create goals outside of poker and stay consistent with them, and you will start to find that managing your tilt becomes quite a bit easier.

Pairrd App by Raise Your Edge
While checking out the most popular courses on our dedicated Raise Your Edge page, you should also have a look at their unique interactive studying tool Pairrd that is coming with engaging video quizzes, range drilling and hand review quizzes, all based on the most up to date GTO ranges out there.
An essential part when learning poker is the ability to think in ranges and understand the why behind them. Raise Your Edge does a great job of getting that across to their students, meticulously breaking down ranges and explaining the reasoning behind them.
However, memorising ranges is quite hard, and often the only way to learn is by making enough costly mistakes to see one’s errors. Thankfully, Raise Your Edge provides a powerful tool to circumvent that with Pairrd.
PokerStrategy.com editor Barry Carter has reviewed Pairrd and concluded about the merits of the innovative app:
“Pairrd is a unique interactive studying tool that provides something relatively new to the world of poker training, a way to practice spots without having to play them at the tables. It is essentially a dynamic way to make real poker decisions without risking money. Since most of us learn from experience, it’s a natural way to memorise the theory from Raise Your Edge.”
