6-7 Meme Backfires: Player Penalized at Bar Poker Open

It was only a matter of time, wasn’t it?

Poker can be serious, but from time to time, jokes and references are often made while playing. However, at the Bar Poker Open, one meme landed a player with a one-round penalty.

So remember, even if you pick up 6♥7♥, perhaps keep the references to a minimum…

Player Exposes Hand

The hand comes from Day 2 of the Bar Poker Open with Joshua Bergman all in from under the gun. The action had folded round to Ian Auvil in the big blind.

“Everybody knows what I got,” he declared to the table, revealing the 7♥ for all to say. “Should I play 6x7x one more time?”

At this point, the dealer interjected.

“You cannot be showing your cards,” they said. “Are you calling?”

However, because he opened his hand — albeit only one card — the floor was called. Meanwhile, Auvil deposited 7♥8♦ face up on the table and told the floor he was checking whether he had 6x7x, as it was his daughter’s favorite hand.

Despite Auvil saying it was a joke between him and Bergman, the floor pointed out that, with action still pending, exposing his hand early would result in a penalty. He subsequently received a one-round penalty.

Famous Poker Penalties

When you think of poker and penalties, Will Kassouf quickly comes to mind. He’s been on the receiving end of numerous penalties in his career, including an orbit penalty in 2016 after a now infamous hand involving him and Stacy Matuson, and a 10-seconds-to-act penalty after perceived slow play in last year’s Main Event.

At last year’s WSOP, a player got a one-round penalty for swearing at a floor manager after refusing to color up, and another for arguing with floor staff after a possible angle shoot.

Even more recently, a player was fully disqualified from the WSOP Europe €5,300 PLO European Championship after being beligerent to staff and his opponents, while at the same venue three years earlier, Michele Nizzardelli was also disqualified from EPT Prague after headbutting an opponent.

As for longest penalties, there’s an all-timer, with one player being given a “12-month suspended penalty” in Macau 15 years ago.
