The comeback talk took off after the Myles Garrett trade, and it hit a new peak Saturday when veterans reported and Sean McVay spoke on it. The market’s been reacting the whole way, and the price has bounced around a lot.

What Sean McVay Said About Aaron Donald’s Comeback

Rams veterans reported Saturday, and McVay didn’t have an answer. He said Donald is going through a “very strict, regimented process” to see how his body feels, the same way he trained when he played.

“I genuinely do not have an answer on whether he is or isn’t,” McVay said. “If he feels good, then you guys know he’s going to be ready to rock. But if not, he’s earned the right. He doesn’t owe us anything.”

McVay said the two first talked when he asked Donald what he thought about the Garrett trade. The Rams want him back. They’re just letting him decide on his own time.

Will Aaron Donald Actually Return?

The insiders lean yes. NFL Network’s Steve Wyche said everything points to Donald coming back at some point in camp, and ESPN’s Sarah Barshop wouldn’t be shocked if he unretired during the season.

The reasons are easy to see. Garrett would draw the double teams Donald faced his whole career, the Rams are NFL Super Bowl odds favorites, and the title game is at their home SoFi Stadium. The two have 236.5 career sacks and five Defensive Player of the Year awards between them.

There’s plenty working against it, too. There have been no contract talks, Donald turned 35 in May, and he’s said he won’t come back as a lesser version of himself. The Rams have a deep defensive line as it is, so his role would be part-time, not every down.

Adam Schefter thinks this could drag out all summer. Donald doesn’t need camp to cash a ticket anyway, since a late-season signing counts the same, so a firm answer might be a while off. The market still likes his chances of playing, just not as much as it did a week ago.
