AFL Investigates Suns Staff Betting Links

The Australian Football League’s integrity unit has launched an investigation into a Gold Coast Suns staff member following reports of links to a bookmaker previously penalized by Victoria’s gambling regulator. The case has drawn attention due to the intersection between professional sport and betting interests, particularly where compliance obligations apply to accredited personnel.

Mark Opie, a long-time administrator with Richmond Football Club and a life member of that organization, is at the center of the review. He moved to the Suns in 2024 and has been seen in a matchday capacity alongside senior coaching staff during the current AFL season. His previous work includes a role during Richmond’s premiership period from 2017 to 2020.

Investigation Focuses on Bookmaker Connection

Reports indicate that Opie was involved in a bookmaker partnership known as Okebet, which has been subject to regulatory action. The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission imposed a penalty of AU$100,000 on the firm in 2024 after determining that it had entered into arrangements with local football clubs that encouraged players to open betting accounts.

Authorities concluded that these activities breached laws governing inducements. The bookmaker challenged the decision before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, but the ruling was upheld earlier this year. While the matter remains formally unresolved, enforcement of the penalty has been paused pending final determination.

Acording to The Guardian, the regulator’s chief executive, Suzy Neilan, addressed the broader implications of the case, stating: “Local footy clubs are often the heart of their communities, places where people come together to support one another. They should not be used as vehicles to promote gambling, particularly where those promotions include inducements that are prohibited by law.”

The integrity unit’s review was reportedly prompted after information surfaced suggesting a potential overlap between Opie’s role within the AFL system and his association with the bookmaker. Individuals accredited within the league are expected to disclose any conflicts of interest, including those linked to gambling activities.

Club Response and Compliance Requirements

The Gold Coast Suns acknowledged awareness of the situation and confirmed cooperation with the ongoing investigation. The club did not provide specifics regarding Opie’s role or employment status when questioned, but emphasized adherence to established governance standards.

“All of our people adhere by the rules and regulations of employment with the football club and abide by the training, education and requirements of working within the AFL industry,” a spokesperson said.

Officials from the AFL, as well as representatives for Opie and the bookmaker, have been approached for comment. At this stage, the league has not indicated a timeline for completing its review.

Attention surrounding the investigation has been heightened by Okebet’s previous regulatory issues. The company was found to have engaged in promotional practices that included incentives connected to grassroots sports organizations. Authorities also noted that some marketing efforts targeted individuals who had previously opted out of gambling activities.

Regulators have consistently raised concerns about the use of community sports environments for betting promotion, citing the potential impact on vulnerable groups. In this context, the involvement of a person holding accreditation within the AFL system has become a focal point for scrutiny.

Records indicate that an individual identified as Mark Bradley Opie, along with several partners, received approval to operate the bookmaker in 2021. While the other partners are no longer associated with the business, he remains registered as a bookmaker in Victoria.

The investigation comes at a time when relationships between professional sports organizations and wagering operators are under increased examination. The AFL has faced ongoing pressure to ensure clear boundaries between its personnel and gambling interests, particularly as betting partnerships remain a prominent feature of the sport’s commercial landscape.
