On Monday, the start of legalized online casino gaming and online sports betting in Alberta began.
Dozens of operators started providing real money casino games to residents in the province.
Alberta became just the second Canadian territory to offer legalized iGaming, joining Ontario. Ontario online casinos were legalized in April 2022.
While Alberta did a lot to follow the lead of Ontario, the two markets do have some differences.

Alberta Online Casinos vs. Ontario Online Casinos: A Comparison
Now that the Alberta market is live, here’s a look at some of the key characteristics of what Alberta features, and how that compares to the more mature Ontario market.
The only major differences on the ground level are that Alberta has appointed the Alberta iGaming Corporation to oversee iGaming in the province despite the industry being regulated by the AGLC. Ontario has put both responsibilities in the hands of the OLGC.
The minimum age to gamble online is also slightly different, with Alberta allowing anyone 18 and older to use iGaming products. Ontario has set its minimum age to 19.
Both provinces will be strict with what they will allow their legalized operators to promote.
- No adds appealing to minors
- No ads including underage individuals
- No ads including celebrities, influencers, or professional athletes
- No ads implying success, status, or attractiveness through gambling
- No ads implying likely winnings
- No ads implying gambling is a way to recover losses
- No add suggesting gambling is essential in life
Both provinces also have strict policies for affiliates. In either case, affiliates will not be able to promote any kind of bonuses, inducements, or credits. That includes detailing any kind of welcome bonuses or sign-up offers, or any other promotions that would include deposit matches, bonus credits, or odds boosts.
Each province also requires operators to promote the province’s self-exclusion program and responsible gaming materials that are available to users.
Alberta is using an all-encompassing self-exclusion program. If a user opts to self-exclude on one iGaming platform, that will be in effect for all available Alberta online casinos.
Ontario doesn’t have that same policy at the time, but it working toward having the same approach that Alberta is implementing.
What Tax Revenue can Alberta Online Casinos Generate?
It would be difficult for Alberta to be targeting Ontario’s tax revenue rates from iGaming.
Given that Ontario has over 3x as many people in the province, and has been around for four years, it should generate much more annual tax revenue.
In 2025, Ontario online casinos recorded a record CA$3.15 billion in revenue in the province. That brought in $630.6 million in tax revenue for Ontario. Altogether that was a 40% increase compared to what the province’s market did in 2024.
Alberta is likely to see a slow start to its online casino revenue generation, similar to what Ontario experienced. Customers and residents can be apprehensive about using online casinos at first and may need to grow comfortable with the idea.
Positive outlooks call for the province to generate around CA$500 million in iGaming revenue by its third year, which would result in $100 million in tax revenue.
