- Alberta officially approved its legal and regulated sports betting and iGaming market in May 2025
- After more than a year since the bill’s approval, Alberta has officially launched its regulated iGaming and online sports betting market
- Alberta joins Ontario as only the second Canada province to have a regulated gaming market
Alberta regulated iGaming and online sports betting is finally here as a number of Canada sports betting apps are now available in the province.
The Alberta Gaming, Liquor, & Cannabis Commission today ushered in the province’s regulated online sports betting and iGaming market nearly after provincial lawmakers approved a bill to regulate both.
Major sports betting companies, such as DraftKings Alberta, bet365 Alberta, FanDuel Alberta, theScore Bet Alberta, Caesars Sportsbook Alberta and BetMGM Alberta, have successfully registered to launch in Alberta’s regulated sports betting market.
Largest Sports Betting, iGaming Operators Now Live in Alberta
As of Friday, July 10, the Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) has approved 50 Canada sports betting apps as iGaming operators for the initial launch. The AGLC has also approved 58 iGaming critical gaming systems providers and 14 iGaming platform providers for operation in the province.
For years, PlayAlberta was the only legal Alberta sports betting app and regulated iGaming site in the province, it is not necessarily the only operator currently in the province. However, operators offered gaming in Alberta as part of the gray market, where they offered games to Canadian sports bettors and customers but provided the Alberta government with no tax revenues.
The following notable operators have successfully registered to participate in Alberta’s regulated markets:
- bet365 Alberta
- Bet99 Alberta
- Caesars Sportsbook Alberta
- Bally Bet
- BetMGM Alberta
- DraftKings Alberta
- FanDuel Alberta
- Golden Nugget Onlne Gaming
- Play Alberta
- PointsBet
- theScore Bet Alberta
- BetRivers Alberta
Several operators released statements prior to going live in the newest Canada province.
“Alberta represents an exciting new chapter for FanDuel Canada, and we look forward to the opportunity to bring our industry-leading Casino and Sportsbook experience to players across the province,” Dale Hooper, General Manager, FanDuel Canada, said in a company release. “As we plan to enter this new market, we’re committed to delivering a best-in-class entertainment experience and meaningful community engagement remains at the heart of everything we do.”
Eric Hession, president of Caesars Digital, said Alberta’s launch of its regulated markets is a “defining moment for our digital business.”
“This launch reflects our commitment to delivering premium gaming experiences supported by reliable technology and grounded in responsible gaming. We’re grateful for the continued collaboration of the Alberta iGaming Corporation leading up to this launch.”
Aaron LaBerge, chief technology officer and head of interactive at PENN Entertainment, said the company is launching theScore Bet Sportsbook and Casino, as well as its standalone Hollywood Casino and theScore Casino apps, in Alberta today.
“Alberta has an incredible sports culture, and we’re excited to bring theScore Bet Sportsbook & Casino to players across the province,” LaBerge said in a company release. “Fans already know and trust theScore, and with theScore Bet, we’re extending that connection into a seamless sportsbook and casino experience. Whether you’re following your favorite team, placing a bet, or enjoying casino games, we’ve built the experience around the way fans naturally engage with sports. We commend the Alberta government for introducing a regulated online gaming market for private operators and look forward to serving fans in one of Canada’s great sports markets.”
Loosely Based on Ontario Model
The newly launched regulated Alberta sports betting market is loosely based on Ontario’s legalization model. It allows for multiple private-sector operators to do business in Alberta, allowing those operating in the gray market to license themselves in the province. It also establishes the Alberta iGaming Corporation to regulate, license, and oversee the operations of iGaming.
Under the regulated markets, license operators will have to pay 20% of net gaming revenue to the province, while keeping the remaining 80%. Licensed operators must pay a $50,000 CAD application fee and will be beholden to $150,000 CAD renewal fee.
The rules set the minimum age of play at 18.
Additionally, all licensed operators must promote the AGLC’s self-exclusion program and responsible gaming materials in the province. Operators are required to allow players to easily access the AGLC’s centralized self-exclusion tool through the iGaming sit and have controls in place to prevent self-excluded players from accessing their account or from engaging in gaming activity.
If a player enrolls in a self-exclusion program, an operator will be required to refund any player’s wager if the event or series of events have yet to begin. However, operators are not required to refunds a player’s bet if the player enrolls after the commencement of the event.
Alberta lawmakers approved the bill to regulate its gaming markets in May 2025.
