New York City launched a new era of gambling on Tuesday with its first-ever live table games at Resorts World in Queens.
Gambling enthusiasts from across the city flocked to the reimagined Aqueduct Racetrack location to experience a landmark expansion featuring over 240 live dealer tables, including blackjack, craps, baccarat, and roulette.
For one local player, Nikki, the new tables save her the long trek to other gambling hubs like Atlantic City. “It’s a lot of tables. It’s a lot of money here,” she said.
The shift from electronic machines to live dealers is about trust and the human element of the game, Nikki said. “I feel the machine rips you off because it picks for you,” she explained. “With the live people, you can tell when she spins, it lands on whatever and it’s a go.”
The launch has created roughly 1,250 new jobs, and employs nearly 1,000 dealers trained specifically for this expansion. Resorts World is the first of three licensed downstate casinos to begin operations.
