BetMGM is the first operator to make it official, now that Alberta has reportedly opened up licensing for igaming and sports betting, with pre-registration permitted soon.

Gaming News Canada was first out of the gate with the Alberta news this morning, reporting that there was a call yesterday between government officials overseeing the launch of the Alberta igaming market and representatives from sports betting and online casino operators, industry suppliers, land-based casinos and other stakeholders.
Proposed tax rate looks to be 20% on 97% gross gaming revenue, according to the reporting (there’s a deduction for First Nations funding and social responsibility to be applied to GGR before the split happens). Ontario’s igaming market has a flat 20% on GGR for operators.
20% Tax Rate
AGLC will handle registration, then the new Alberta iGaming Corporation will finalize commercial agreements with the operators. Gaming News Canada reported the registration fee for an iGaming Operator license will be a $150,000 annual fee plus a $50,000 one-time application fee.
There’s an igaming bulletin on the Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC) website advising applicants for registration as an igaming supplier in the province that the Standards and Requirements for Internet Gaming (SRIG) is now available for download on AGLC’s website.
Alberta Market Launch in 2026
SRIG has been organized in sections covering general information, regulatory oversight, social responsibility, general standards and requirements for registered igaming suppliers, and information technology and security requirements.
A spokesperson from BetMGM, one of the leading licensed igaming operators in the regulated Ontario market, coming up on its fourth anniversary, reached out to Casino.org this afternoon with this statement:
“BetMGM thrives on integrating sports and casino experiences, and Alberta represents the first jurisdiction with a multi-product launch in over four years,” said Matt Prevost, Chief Revenue Officer, BetMGM. “Given our track record of success in Ontario we are committed to delivering legal, safe, regulated sports betting and iGaming to Alberta in the coming months.”
Major industry operators like DraftKings, FanDuel, theScore Bet, PointsBet and NorthStar are expected to jump into the Alberta market once it’s officially launched.
