- Blue Jays see big swing in World Series Futures
- Jays betting favourites for Game 1 of the ALCS tomorrow against the Mariners
- Bichette a possibility to return; rosters set by tomorrow 10 a.m.
Watching the ALDS fifth game last night between the Tigers and the Mariners, the winner going on to play the Blue Jays tomorrow, all I could think watching Tigers starter Tarik Skubal, leading 2-1 in the sixth inning, a league playoff record 11 strikeouts to that point, was for him to keep pitching.

15-Inning Marathon
Canadian bettors were no doubt thinking the same thing. Skubal is a Top 3 best pitcher in the game. The two teams were playing in Seattle, meaning the winner had to hop a plane early today and jet cross country to Toronto to take on the Jays in the ALCS tomorrow. The longer Skubal pitched the better for the Blue Jays.
What happened, as we all now know, was the Mariners pulling out the series win in a 15-inning marathon, 3-2 win, after a Jorge Polanco single, the longest winner-take-all game in MLB history (Skubal made it through six innings, 101 pitches, and finished with 13 strikeouts, giving up just two hits).
Blue Jays Well Rested
The Blue Jays knocked out the Yankees in four games, on Thursday night, so they’ve had plenty of time to rest their guys and set their roster.
Not having to face Skubal is huge. Another huge factor for bettors is this: The Mariners used seven pitchers (including three starters), tossing 209 pitches overall, last night. Right-hander George Kirby started the game and went five innings, starters Luis Castillo and Logan Gilbert, 1.1 innings and 2.0 innings, respectively.
Woo a Possibility for Mariners
The Jays and Mariners have a deadline of 10 a.m. EST tomorrow to announce their ALCS rosters – 26 spots, with a maximum of 13 pitchers allowed. Players can be subbed out due to injury, but that would mean they are ineligible for the next round, meaning they would miss the World Series.
Game time tomorrow for Game 1 is 8:03 p.m. EST. This morning, at BetRivers, the Jays are -167 on the Moneyline, the Mariners +140. At BetMGM, Moneyline is at Jays -161, Mariners +235.
The status of Bryan Woo is a big “if” for the Mariners, that will impact betting odds on the series. Woo, the Mariners’ best starting pitcher this season (15-7, 2.94, 198:36 K:BB over 186.2 innings) missed the Tigers’ series, out with pectoral inflammation. Woo threw a bullpen session and was smiling and high-fiving teammates yesterday, a positive sign for his availability against the Jays.
A big storyline for the Blue Jays is SS Bo Bichette back running the bases, working his way back from a knee injury, so he’s a possibility. Bichette hit .311 this season, with 18 HRs, 94 RBIs, and a .840 OPS. SP Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer are good bets to join the roster as well. Scherzer pitched a five-inning, simulated game Tuesday.
+6500 World Series Odds at Start of Season
“We’ll see how he kind of bounces back from that,” Mariners’ manager Dan Wilson told MLB.com before the session and ahead of ALDS Game 5. “These are the decisions we’re going to have to make pretty quickly once this game concludes tonight. So yeah, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there, but we’re certainly hopeful.”
Meanwhile, Johnny Avello, Las Vegas bookmaker and Director of Race & Sportsbook at DraftKings, said the Blue Jays’ World Series odds have skyrocketed, a huge swing, one of the most dramatic shifts in baseball he has seen.
That of course opens the question of a huge Jays’ liability, since Canadian bettors back the home teams heavily, as we’ve written here in the past.
Does Bichette Return?
On opening day, the Jays were +6500 to win the World Series and +2500 to win the American League at DraftKings. Now Toronto sits +340 to win the World Series at DraftKings and -115 to win the AL – a massive swing that underscores the team’s surge (Mariners are -105 to win the ALCS).
“We had the Blue Jays at 65-1 to win the World Series on Opening Day, and quietly, those odds kept getting shorter as the season went on,” said Avello. “It’s turned into one of the most surprising runs we’ve seen in baseball this year.”
