Brazil Overcomes Slow Start (Again) in Round of 32
In the first game of the group stage, Brazil fell behind Morocco 1-0 early – and were thoroughly outplayed in the opening half hour – before rallying for a 1-1 draw.
On Monday, the script was all too familiar for A Seleção, as a lethargic attack conceded to a Japan counterattack, leading to a 1-0 halftime deficit against the Blue Samurai.
But it proved a tale of two halves as Brazil dominated the final 45 minutes. Casemiro equalized on a bullet header (off a brilliant cross from Gabriel) in the 56th minute before substitute Gabriel Martinelli scored the winner in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
On the whole, the second half built on a solid two-game streak to end the group stage, which saw Brazil dominate Haiti (3-0) and Brazil (3-0). The variety in goalscorers was a welcome sight; Vinicius Jr (4) and Matheus Cunha (3) accounted for all seven of Brazil’s markers in the group stage.
Despite the building momentum, Brazil only sits fifth the odds to win the World Cup, trading at 7.4% at prediction site Kalshi.
Norway Attack Launches Vikings to Round of 16
Norway piled up eight goals in the group stage (four from Erling Haaland) and added another pair in their 2-1 win over a game Ivory Coast team in the round of 32 on Tuesday afternoon. Haaland added his fifth of the tournament and game-winner in the 86th minute. Antonio Nusa gave Norway a 1-0 lead late in the first half before Amad Diallo equalized for the Ivorians in the 74th.
Norway has a stunningly good history against Brazil, winning twice and drawing twice in four all-time meetings. Unfortunately for the Vikings, the most-recent was in 2006.
