Blackjack could disappear from California cardrooms under new gaming regulations approved by the California Department of Justice.
Attorney General Rob Bonta recently signed off on two new rule sets targeting player-dealer rotation games and blackjack-style games. Cardroom operators say the new interpretation could effectively outlaw blackjack in their facilities.
Industry leaders warn the impact could be massive:
• A $6 billion gaming industry
• Around 20,000 jobs
• Roughly $500 million in state and local tax revenue
Some operators say the rule could cut their revenue in half. Others warn layoffs could follow.
Tribal gaming leaders say the regulations simply enforce existing law and protect consumers.
Cardrooms have until May 31 to submit compliance plans, and legal challenges may be coming.
So the big question now:
Should blackjack stay in California cardrooms?
