Big changes could be coming to California card rooms — and players need to pay attention.

Tournament Director Justin Hammer explains the recent California DOJ ruling that blackjack can no longer be offered the way card rooms have been operating for years. While traditional blackjack has technically been illegal under Penal Code 330, card rooms have long relied on an interpretation that allowed them to facilitate the game (without banking it), similar to how works.

Now, the DOJ has sided with tribal casinos and ruled that this interpretation is incorrect. Card rooms have been ordered to stop offering these games by April 1st — and there was no vote required because this is considered a reinterpretation of existing law.

So what does this mean for players?

Many major rooms — including Commerce, The Bike, Hollywood Park, Bay 101, and Club One in Fresno — rely heavily on blackjack-style games for revenue. Some rooms say it makes up nearly half their income. If that revenue disappears, rooms may look to make up the difference through:

• Higher tournament fees
• Increased cash game rake
• Higher food and service prices
• Other operational changes

Legal battles, injunctions, and hearings are likely, so this story is far from over. But if you play poker in California, this ruling could directly impact the cost of your game.

This is one to watch closely.
