- Canada is a -160 moneyline favorite over Finland in Saturday’s World Championship semifinal at Swiss Life Arena in Zurich
- Both teams posted identical +20 goal differentials in the preliminary round, and each cruised through their quarterfinal matchups
- See my Canada vs Finland prediction, props and odds for Saturday’s semifinal below
Canada has been on a mission since arriving in Switzerland, and the 4-0 shutout of the defending champion Americans in the quarterfinals made that pretty clear. Now they’ve got Finland standing between them and a gold medal game.
The Finns aren’t here to roll over. They went 6-0-0-1 in the prelims and handled Czechia 4-1 in the quarters behind another strong performance from Justus Annunen. These two programs have met in the gold medal game four times in the last decade, splitting those 2-2. Saturday’s semifinal feels like it could go the same way.
Puck drop is 2 pm ET from Swiss Life Arena in Zurich, with NHL Network and TSN on the broadcast. Here are my Canada vs Finland prediction, props and odds for Saturday’s World Championship semifinal.
Canada vs Finland Prediction
My Canada vs Finland prediction is on the under. I expect Canada to win this game, but not by enough to justify laying -160 on the moneyline. Instead, I’m betting on a tight, low-scoring semifinal between two of the best defensive teams in the tournament.
Finland has allowed just 12 goals in eight games, an average of 1.5 per contest. Canada has been nearly as stingy at 1.6 goals against per game. Both goaltenders have been outstanding, and that sets up a game where chances are going to be hard to come by.
Canada vs Finland Goaltender Stats
The loss of Evan Bouchard is a factor here too. Canada’s best offensive defenseman took a bad hit from Ryan Lindgren in the quarterfinal and is done for the tournament. Bouchard was logging over 20 minutes a night and had a tournament-best +14 rating. That’s a significant chunk of Canada’s offensive production from the blueline that isn’t walking through the door Saturday.
History backs the under as well. Five of the last six playoff meetings between Canada and Finland at the World Championship have finished under 5.5 goals. When these two meet with a medal on the line, both teams lock it down. I see a 3-1 or 3-2 final.
Canada vs Finland Props
Even in a lower-scoring game, Celebrini is the most likely Canadian to find the net. He leads the tournament with 37 shots on goal and has scored six times in eight games. He opened the scoring on the power play in the quarterfinal shutout of the U.S. and has been averaging 18:48 of ice time per game.
Finland’s Annunen has been good, but Celebrini creates so many quality chances that even a .920 goalie is going to have trouble keeping him off the board. I like him at +180 to lead off my Canada vs Finland props.
Lundell has four goals and six points in eight games, but the stat that stands out is his 30 shots on goal. That’s the most on Finland’s roster by a wide margin. He’s also chipped in three power play goals, which matters in a game where special teams could decide things.
He’s been a different player since Barkov’s return to competitive hockey, and the two Panthers forwards know each other’s game inside and out. I’ll take +280 to wrap up my Canada vs Finland props.
Canada vs Finland Leading Scorers
Canada Leading Scorers
Celebrini’s 12 points put him near the top of the tournament scoring race, while Crosby finally broke through with his first goal against the Americans.
Bouchard’s absence will be felt on the power play, where Canada has only three goals in the tournament. Someone on the back end needs to step up, and Denton Mateychuk (2G, 2A in 8 GP) might be next in line.
Finland Leading Scorers
The big story for Finland is Aleksander Barkov. The Panthers captain missed the entire NHL season and the Olympics with a torn ACL, but he’s looked fully healthy in Switzerland with nine points in eight games. He’s been playing nearly 19 minutes a night and winning faceoffs at a 68.5% clip, second-best in the tournament.
Puljujarvi has been one of the surprises of the tournament, matching Barkov with nine points. Finland has also been getting strong production from their blueline, with Jokiharju (2G, 6A, +9) and Heinola (3G, 3A, 26 SOG) both chipping in offensively.
Canada vs Finland Odds
Odds as of May 29 via BET99. Check out SBD’s Bet99 promo code to bet on the World Hockey Championship.
Canada’s -160 moneyline carries about a 62% implied probability, while Finland at +140 sits around 42%. Those numbers are closer than any other semifinal matchup on the board, and that lines up with how evenly matched these two have been in tournament play.
The Canada vs Finland odds have the puck line at 1.5, with Canada at +170 and Finland at -225. That tells you the books expect this to be a one-goal game. The total at 5.5 is juiced to the under at -160, which is where I’m playing it. Both team totals are set at 2.5, with the over on Canada at -150 and the over on Finland at +120.
