From Emerson Thome to Joao Pedro, there have been plenty of Brazilians that have represented Chelsea over the years.
Chelsea are one of the biggest football clubs in world football and have had players featuring in their ranks from all corners of the globe, so it is not surprising that there have been plenty of Brazilian players to have donned the famous blue shirt.
In total, 17 Brazilians have represented Chelsea over the years, from the very first, Emerson Thome, to the three Samba stars currently wowing supporters at Stamford Bridge – Andrey Santos, Joao Pedro and Estevao.
Many of the Brazilians included on this list have played their part in some of Chelsea’s most iconic moments, winning major trophies and scoring some eye-catching goals.
Below we have run through all the Brazilians that have featured for the Blues over the years, while it is also worth mentioning former Chelsea alumni Diego Costa, Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri, who were all born in Brazil but represented other countries during their international careers.
Willian 339 games, 63 goals
No Brazilian player has made more appearances for Chelsea or scored more goals than mercurial winger Willian, who endeared himself to the club’s supporters before even kicking a ball after performing a late U-turn to join the club rather than Tottenham.
Over his seven years at Stamford Bridge, Willian won five major honours, notably two Premier League titles and was also named Chelsea’s player of the year in 2016.
Ramires 251 apps, 34 goals
Ramires spent six wonderful years at Chelsea, winning all three domestic trophies during his time in west London, while he also played a major role in the club’s maiden Champions League success in 2012.
The midfielder scored an iconic chip in the second leg of their semi-final tie against Barcelona to help steer Chelsea through, although suspension meant he was unable to feature in the final against Bayern Munich which the Blues won on penalties.
David Luiz 248 games, 18 goals
The most Brazilian of Brazilian centre backs, David Luiz might actually be Chelsea’s most iconic player from the Samba nation, with his two spells at the club being filled with memorable moments, whether in the form of an amazing goal or a calamitous mistake.
Another member of Chelsea’s Champions League-winning squad of 2012 – scoring his penalty in the shootout against Bayern after playing through the pain barrier during the match – Luiz also won two Europa Leagues, two FA Cups and the Premier League during his time at Stamford Bridge.
Oscar 203 games, 38 goals
Oscar joined Chelsea just after their maiden Champions League success and went on to win four major titles during his time at Stamford Bridge, scoring some impressive goals along the way, including a brace on his full debut against Juventus.
The attacking midfielder arguably never rediscovered his best form after representing Brazil at the 2014 World Cup and he left Chelsea for Chinese Super League club Shanghai Port in January 2017 at the age of just 25.
Thiago Silva 155 games, 9 goals
There are not many players that can join a side of Chelsea’s stature just one month shy of their 36th birthday, but go on to become one of the club’s most important players over the following four seasons, amassing over 150 appearances.
Well, that is exactly what Thiago Silva did after moving from PSG in 2020, the centre back going on to help Chelsea to their second Champions League crown in 2021. His son, Iago, is part of the Chelsea academy and an England youth international, so could follow in his father’s footsteps in the future.
Alex 134 games, 10 goals
Another Brazilian centre back with an eye for a spectacular goal, Alex originally joined Chelsea in 2004 but work permit issues meant he was not able to play for the club until 2007, instead spending three years on loan at PSV.
With the likes of John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho in front of him in the pecking order, Alex was not always a regular, but he still won a Premier League title and two FA Cups with the club, as well as being part of the squad that made Chelsea’s first Champions League final in 2008.
Emerson Thome 22 games, 0 goals
The first Brazilian to play for Chelsea when he joined from Sheffield Wednesday in late 1999, Emerson Thome is perhaps more of an obscure quiz question than a Blues legend.
Thome’s opportunities at Stamford Bridge were limited as he struggled to break into the team ahead of fellow centre backs Marcel Desailly and Frank Leboeuf – no disgrace in that – but he did win the FA Cup during his brief stay.
Chelsea’s current Brazilians
Chelsea’s current crop of Brazilians all appear to have bright futures, with forward Joao Pedro leading the team’s scoring charts for 2025-26 with 18 strikes across all competitions.
Winger Estevao is also flourishing in his debut campaign, and at just 18, the sky really is the limit for him, while midfielder Andrey Santos is starting to establish himself in the first team after numerous loan spells away from the club.
Forward Deivid Washington has made three first-team appearances, all during the 2023-24 season, and he is currently developing his skills with the club’s under-21s.
And the rest…
Of the six remaining Brazilians to play for Chelsea, Juliano Belletti is the only one to amass more than 30 appearances and he was part of the club’s double-winning side of 2009-10.
Winger Kenedy made 30 appearances over seven years but is perhaps more famous for his loan spells away from the club, while full-back Filipe Luis was a bit-part player in his one season in west London, but he did manage to win the Premier League and EFL Cup.
The remaining three players, Lucas Piazon, Alexandre Pato and Mineiro, all made just a handful of appearances, although Pato did famously score on his Blues debut against Aston Villa.
