Early UFC 330 Odds & Predictions: Best Bets for Makhachev vs. Machado Garry

The Octagon takes over the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia for a massive pay-per-view card on Saturday night. The main card action kicks off at 10:00 PM ET on Paramount+, headlined by Islam Makhachev putting his pound-for-pound status on the line against Ian Machado Garry.

This is an early look at the board, and finding value requires looking past the heavy juice to the stylistic matchups inside the cage. I have isolated the spots where I think the market is mispricing the real outcome.

Without further delay, here is my early breakdown of the UFC 330 odds and predictions, starting with the Makhachev vs. Garry main event.

Early UFC 330 Odds (Main Card)

The BetMGM lines are loaded with heavy favorites across the entire main card. Mansur Abdul-Malik at -625 and Esteban Ribovics at -600 are the two steepest chalk plays, and laying that kind of juice on the moneyline is rarely profitable in MMA. That forces us to hunt for situational angles instead, which is exactly where the early value lives.

UFC 330 Main Card Predictions

Makhachev vs. Garry Prediction

This is the clearest striker-vs-grappler fight on the main card. Ian Machado Garry has the length at 6-foot-3 with a 74-inch reach, and he needs space to win minutes. Islam Makhachev is shorter with a 70-inch reach, but that only matters if Garry can keep him off his hips.

Throughout his career, Makhachev has taken down and controlled almost every opponent, logging a takedown in 14 of his 18 UFC fights. He landed a knockdown in three of the other four fights.

Coversely, the last time Garry faced a physical, Sambo-style grappler, he ceded 11:41 control in a loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov. Other fighters, including Belal Muhammad and Geoff Neal, also experienced some success against him by pushing him against the fence.

Garry is durable and a good enough grappler to survive, but I do not see him winning enough clean minutes to take the decision, nor does he have enough power to deter the pound-for-pound king’s relentless attack.

Dern vs. Robertson Best Bet

I do not have a clean answer for how Gillian Robertson wins this matchup. Both women can be awkward and unorthodox on the feet, but Mackenzie Dern is the more aggressive striker and the more dangerous grappler. Robertson’s best wins usually come when she can turn fights into grimy, top-control rounds, and that is almost impossible against Dern.

Robertson’s grappling form is real, with 9:17 of control time against Amanda Lemos and 12:34 against Michelle Waterson-Gomez. The problem is that Dern is not a normal grappling opponent; she is arguably the greatest BJJ practitioner in women’s MMA history. Dern is coming off a fight in which she allowed 9:07 control on nine takedowns, yet still did enough off her back and was active enough on her feet to win the title.

Without a decisive grappling edge, Robertson becomes way too limited to win minutes here. ‘The Savage’ has no Plan B when her physical grappling style does not work.

Johnson vs. Ochoa Pick

Nobody should like what Charles Johnson is doing with his career right now. This is already his fourth fight of the last year, and he is 2-3 over his last five. He was knocked down twice and finished by Alex Perez, then got controlled for 8:48 and submitted by Asu Almabayev. That is a brutal workload for a 35-year-old whose game has always relied on athleticism, speed and reaction time.

Jose Ochoa is only 2-2 in the UFC, but the context matters. He dropped Clayton Carpenter and landed 153 significant strikes in a clear decision win, and he also finished Cody Durden after limiting him to nine significant strikes. The only two fighters to beat him were top-10-ranked Lone’er Kavanagh and Almabayev.

Johnson is active, tough and experienced, but I think he is burned out and catching one of the heavier hitters in the division at the wrong time. As talented as he is, fighting every two months at this point in his career is hurting him significantly.

Abdul-Malik vs. Stoltzfus Prediction

This looks like a clear reset spot for Mansur Abdul-Malik after the brutal Yousri Belgaroui loss. He was outstruck badly there, landing only 16 significant strikes on 60 attempts and getting knocked down twice. I still do not think Dustin Stoltzfus is the opponent to punish those striking flaws for three rounds.

Abdul-Malik is bigger and more explosive, with an 80-inch reach to Stoltzfus’ 75 inches. Stoltzfus is a capable grappler who can create control and submission looks, but very few people are going to out-grapple the physical Abdul-Malik.

Everyone will be expecting a finish, but Abdul-Malik is still an extremely limited striker who thrives on taking opponents out with his aggressive ground-and-pound. Stoltzfus’ grappling style opens up submission attempts more than ground-and-pound, but Abdul-Malik has just one tap-out win on his record. Jiu-jitsu is very much on the back of his mind.

I expect Abdul-Malik to win the physical exchanges and dominate control time without forcing a finish.

Ribovics vs. Barboza Best Bet

Esteban Ribovics probably knocks out the 40-year-old version of Edson Barboza, but the number I like is the total. Barboza is still dangerous early, and that matters against an aggressive striker. He also enters off three straight losses, including a first-round knockout against Jalin Turner and decision losses to Drakkar Klose and Lerone Murphy.

Ribovics has early power, but his best UFC stretches have come through volume. He landed 156 significant strikes against Daniel Zellhuber, 147 against Nasrat Haqparast and 122 against Elves Brener. The Terrance McKinney knockout is his one early blowout in the UFC, but more often he builds damage as the fight opens up.

Barboza is coming off a first-round knockout loss, but 11 of his 14 UFC losses have come after the 1.5-round mark. I expect danger early, then the cleaner over path before Barboza fades and crumbles under Ribovics’ pressure late.
