The Philadelphia Flyers are one of only four teams in NHL history to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Could they be the latest franchise to blow a 3-0 lead? Online sportsbooks don’t think so, but they are expecting the Pittsburgh Penguins to send their 1st Round series back to Philly in the latest NHL odds.

Pittsburgh is a -135 moneyline favorite in Game 5 tonight, after staving off elimination with a 4-2 victory on Saturday in Game 4. The underlying metrics certainly support a Pens victory, and I’ll be backing them to extend the series once more in my Flyers vs Penguins Game 5 prediction. Pittsburgh Penguins Moneyline (-135 at Bet365)

My favorite bet tonight is on the Pens moneyline. Pittsburgh’s stars finally showed up in Game 4, and the improved goaltending they received from Arturs Silvos has got to be a major confidence boost heading into tonight.

Silvos stopped 28 of 30 shots in Game 4, posting a .933 save percentage and stopping 0.8 goals above expectation. That’s a major upgrade from the goaltending the Penguins got in Games 1 through 3, as Stuart Skinner ranks 18th out of 20 postseason netminders in save percentage, and bottom-four in GAA and expected goals saved.

As for the offensive attack, Sidney Crosby, Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang combined for 4 points, including the game-winning goal, while posting a +2 rating with 7 shots on net.

Pittsburgh once again dominated puck possession in Game 4, but that’s been a theme all series. The Pens controlled the puck for 59.3% of the play at even strength, and have held possession for 60% of the time during 5-on-5 situations for the duration of the series.

They’ve also created more scoring chances and high danger opportunities at even strength than Philly, and have generated 6.41 expected goals for compared to just 5.94 by the Flyers. Despite the ice seemingly being tilted in Pittsburgh’s favor, they’ve scored just twice at even strength while Philadelphia has eight 5-on-5 goals. Regression was bound to hit and finally did in Game 4, and I still think there’s even more room for correction, which is why I’m still riding with the Pens tonight.

Erik Karlsson Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-135 at DraftKings)

Moving over to the NHL props streets, where I’m backing Karlsson to get at least 3 pucks on net in Game 5. The Swede leads all Penguins players in ice time by over 20 minutes, and has created 27 shot attempts over the first four games of the series. Only 6 of those shots have found their way on net, which signals major positive regression in his favor.

Karlsson captains the powerplay, kills penalties and is on the ice for nearly half the game. Opportunities are going to continue to find him, and with the Pens backs against the wall, I expect him to help pace the Pittsburgh attack.
