The Winnipeg Jets (23-26-8, 11-15-3 away) visit the Anaheim Ducks (31-23-3, 18-8-1 home) on Friday night, and Anaheim is a deserving favorite per the latest NHL odds. The Ducks have won six straight at Honda Center and just came back from down 4-2 to beat Edmonton 6-5 on Wednesday, a win that gave Joel Quenneville his 1,000th career coaching victory.

Winnipeg needed overtime to get past Vancouver 3-2 to open the post-Olympic slate, and the Jets remain nine points back of a wild card spot with 25 games left.

Jets vs Ducks Prediction

I’m siding with Anaheim at home for my Jets vs Ducks prediction tonight. The Ducks are 18-8-1 on home ice this season, the second-most home wins in the Western Conference, and they’ve won six straight at Honda Center heading into this one. They’re also 10-2-0 in their last 12 games, playing with a level of confidence you rarely see from a team that’s missed the playoffs seven straight years.

Winnipeg is a mess on the road. The Jets are 11-15-3 away from home, and their blueline is decimated, with Josh Morrissey, Neal Pionk, Colin Miller and Haydn Fleury all out. That forces Logan Stanley onto the top pair, which is a brutal matchup against Anaheim’s speed.

Jets vs Ducks Key Stats

Anaheim generates far more shots (30.07 per game, fourth in the NHL) and scores at a significantly higher rate than Winnipeg. The Ducks do give up goals, ranking 31st in goals against, but the Jets aren’t the type of offense that can exploit that. Winnipeg manages just 26.32 shots per game, which ranks 24th in the league.

Anaheim also won the first meeting between these two teams 4-1 back on November 9, and the home team has won four of the last five head-to-head matchups. I expect the Ducks to control the pace in their building and earn their seventh straight home victory.

My first Jets vs Ducks pick targets Kyle Connor’s shot volume. He’s averaging 3.31 shots on goal per game this season and has been even more aggressive lately. He’s cleared 3.5 shots in four of his last five games, including four shots on target in Wednesday’s win over Vancouver. Connor is in the middle of a six-game point streak, and the Jets lean heavily on their top line to generate offense.

Anaheim allows 28.55 shots against per 60 and plays a high-event brand of hockey. With 65 points and 26 goals on the season, Connor will be firing early and often.

Gauthier leads the Ducks with 26 goals and 50 points in 56 games. He scored the game-winner against Edmonton on Wednesday with just 74 seconds left in regulation, and he’s been on a tear with six goals and 10 points in his last 10 games. The 22-year-old is also one of the top shot generators in the league with 211 on the year.

Against a depleted Winnipeg defense missing four of their regular blueliners, Gauthier should have plenty of room to operate. I like him to find the back of the net tonight.

The big news for the Jets vs Ducks projected lineups is Connor Hellebuyck returning to the crease after winning gold with Team USA at the Olympics. Hellebuyck was going through his starting routine at morning skate, per reports, and will make his first start since February 4. He carries a 13-16-7 record with a 2.79 GAA and .900 save percentage this season.

Winnipeg will be without Josh Morrissey (upper body), Neal Pionk (undisclosed), Nino Niederreiter (undisclosed), Colin Miller (knee) and Haydn Fleury (upper body). Gustav Nyquist will play his 900th career NHL game tonight.

Lukas Dostal is expected to get the call for Anaheim. He’s been excellent, posting a 22-13-2 record with a 2.98 GAA and .895 save percentage in 39 games. Dostal has been even better in his last 10, going 9-1 with a 2.47 GAA and .913 save percentage. The Czech netminder backstopped his country at the Olympics before falling to Canada in the quarterfinals.

Leo Carlsson returned to the lineup Wednesday after a thigh injury and immediately made an impact with a goal and two assists against Edmonton. Anaheim will be without Frank Vatrano (shoulder) and Petr Mrazek (hip, out for season), while Mikael Granlund (upper body) is day-to-day.
