Over the weekend, the Major Series of Poker: The Tour (MSPT) was at Riverside Casino just south of Iowa City for the Season 17 Iowa Poker State Championship. The $1,110 buy-in tournament attracted 549 runners and saw Wisconsin’s Josh Reichard, fresh off winning his first gold bracelet this summer at the WSOP, emerge victorious for $111,942.
“People like to say how lucky I am, and I’ll be the first person to tell you I’m the luckiest person in poker,” said Reichard, who claimed his third MSPT title. “So, when you watch a sun run like this one, you need to get lucky in order to win, so keep sending me that energy; I love it.”
He also added to MSPT reporter Anthony Thompson, “I love the MSPT. I mean this is the tour I play the most, the tour I support the most, I wear all their swag everywhere I go, every tournament I play in, so it would be nice to be recognized as one of the best and to see my name on top of the leaderboards.”
Reichard, already an MSPT Hall of Famer, also won a seat into the $3,500 MSPT Championship Rock ‘N’ Roll Poker Open (RRPO), which will be held at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida, Nov. 18 – Dec. 2, as well as 1,700 POY points, which puts him third on that leaderboard.

Others to cash the tournament were Andy Rogowski (10th – $7,996), Gerald Cunniff (17th – $5,331), John Reading (24th – $3,891), Rob Wazwaz (31st – $2,612), Craig Trost (36th – $2,612), and DJ Buckley (48th – $2,132).
Likewise, Reichard’s father, Brett “Pops” Reichard, busted just short of the final table in 13th place, and it happened at the hands of his son. According to MSPT live updates, it happened in Level 22 (20,000/30,000/30,000) when Reichard opened for 70,000 and Jake Wilding called from the button. Pops was short with just 150,000 in the small blind and shoved it in.
His son isolated with a four-bet to 275,000, and that inspired Wilding to fold. Pops showed the K♠8♣ but was way behind the A♣K♣ of the young Reichard. The board ran out a clean 4♣6♥6♣3♥5♦ and just like that, Reichard dispatched Pops in 13th place for $6,397.
Season 17 of the MSPT is already hosting its next stop at Bally’s Black Hawk Casino with the Colorado Poker State Championship this weekend. From there, it will head to Chicago for the first time for the $1,110 buy-in, $750K GTD Illinois Poker State Championship from August 4-9. The tour will then head to JACK Cleveland Casino from August 18-23.
