The Championship has always been known as the most unpredictable league in the world, but League Two has a fair greater claim to that tag these days.

The fourth tier is regularly extremely close and difficult to predict, with the finale often just a case of musical chairs – who happens to be where when the music stops.

This season, there is a clear League Two betting favourite in Salford City, but the fact that just one of the four relegated sides from League One sit in the top seven most likely promoted teams tells the story of the division.

Let’s try and make sense of it all with these football betting tips.

League Two Winner Tips 2026/27

Whereas the favourites are worth being sceptical of in the Championship and League One, we have to be with the top dogs in the fourth tier.

Salford have appointed Peter Cklamovski, an associate of Ange Postecoglou’s after they worked together with Australia, and finally look ready to flex their muscles in a bid to end their long wait to win promotion.

The Red Devils will likely play an attractive, attacking style of football – and, more importantly, have assembled a squad that should dominate.

The headline recruit is Luke Molyneux from Doncaster Rovers, a winger who has registered 43 goals contributions across 85 League One appearances in the last two seasons.

Molyneux also starred at this level when Donny went up themselves in 2023/24 and should be the best player in the division.

Macaulay Langstaff did OK in the Championship with Millwall and should snaffle up the chances Molyneux creates after netting 28 goals at this level in 2023/24.

With Will Aimson and Joe Powell having also been comfortable in League One, this is a squad that looks ready for a level up already and has to be backed at 7/2 .

League Two Promotion Betting Tips

Salford look a good bet at 10/11 in this market, too, but we’ll cast our net a little further for a bigger price.

The best shout could well be Grimsby at 11/5 , who may well have mounted a more serious push for the top three last season had it not been for a winter dip in form that seemed to be a consequence of their run to the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.

They memorably beat Manchester United on that run and, once they had recovered their composure, won eight of their last 12 League Two games of the season.

The Mariners also have a relationship with Jamestown Analytics, a firm fronted by Brighton owner Tony Bloom, which must be a good thing as they look for an edge in a competitive league.

Defeat in the play-offs to Salford in May came via extra time in the semi-final second leg, a cruel way to lose, but this is a club heading in the right direction.

League Two Top-7 Betting Tips

At a marginally odds-on price, Bristol Rovers should be a very safe bet to finish inside the play-off positions at 5/6 .

Steve Evans’ side ended last season brilliantly, winning eight of their last nine games, and Evans has improved the squad in the only way he knows how: plenty of experience and peak-age players.

Jack Aitchison, Tom James and Bobby Kamwa are among the eye-catching additions for the Gas, who seem certain to be competing at the right end.

At a bigger price, let’s have a tickle on Tranmere Rovers at 5/1 .

Tranmere seem to have signed well, adding Jacob Slater, Tom Ince and Will Vaulks, while manager Darrell Clarke knows how to put together a competitive team at this level.

Ownership issues have plagued Rovers in recent seasons but the quality of the team and coach means they have a shot at a top-seven finish.

League Two Relegation Betting Tips

Teams coming down from League One have badly struggled in recent seasons – Carlisle United relegated in 2024/25 and Crawley Town avoiding the same fate by one point in 2025/26 – and backing that trend to continue is the best way to play it in the relegation market.

The first potential victims are Exeter City, whose manager Matt Taylor claimed last week are not ready for the new season and have half a squad that are “not League Two footballers”.

The playing budget has been cut at St James’ Park and Taylor called for a reset over months and years, but that is no good for the here and now. If key striker Jayden Wareham is sold this month, it’s hard to see where the quality comes from.

A host of experience in the first team left at the end of their contracts this summer, including Aitchison (to Bristol Rovers) and Josh Magennis, and the Grecians are 9/2 for the drop.

Northampton Town could also be vulnerable after losing all of their last 11 league games of last season, before losing key men Cameron McGeehan and Dean Campbell.

Chris Hogg has a big job on to stop the slide at Sixfields, with 12/1 available for relegation.

Best league Two Outright Value Bets

It’s a simple one, but Salford to win the title may be the best in the division at 7/2 .

The Gary Neville-owned outfit seem to have got their act together this season and have the best squad in the division by far – with an odds-against price of 6/5 for promotion also attractive.

Backing Grimsby in the top-seven market also looks a safe play.

The Mariners look almost certain to be up there again and should convert that into a play-off position at 5/4 – following on from doing just that last year.
