Bayern Munich had two players sent off in a draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich were fortunate to escape with a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen as their seven-match winning run in all competitions was brought to an end with only nine men on the pitch and VAR denying their hosts an added-time winner.

Aleix García had given the hosts a sixth-minute lead before Nicolas Jackson was shown a red card for an over-the-top tackle on Martin Terrier just before half-time.

Things did not improve for the visitors until the introduction on the hour of Harry Kane, who thought he had scored with only his second touch, only for it to be ruled out for handball.

Luis Díaz equalised in the 69th minute but was sent off for a second yellow card late on before Jonas Hofmann’s goal in the third minute of added time was ruled out after review.

That at least lessened the damage for Bayern, whose lead was cut to nine points by Borussia Dortmund’s win over Augsburg.

The Colombia international had a mixed game as it was his loss of possession which led to Leverkusen’s opener.

He was dispossessed by Montrell Culbreath out wide on the halfway line and with the Bayern winger complaining, the wing-back advanced before moving the ball onto Patrik Schick.

His reverse pass into the path saw Garcia take a touch to create an angle before firing a rising shot into the roof of the net.

Jackson registered Bayern’s only shot on target of the first half but it was saved by Janis Blaswich.

Jonathan Tah thought he had equalised from Michael Olise’s 26th-minute free-kick but VAR ruled the ball had come off his elbow.

VAR’s next intervention was equally as significant just before half-time, ruling Jackson’s tackle on Martin Terrier was ankle-high and warranted an upgrade on the yellow card he was shown.

After the break the tempo increased with Ibrahim Maza, Schick (twice) and Malik Tillman all having chances for the hosts and Diaz firing over.

Kane emerged from the bench and thought he had equalised immediately, charging down Blaswich’s clearance with his first touch and tapping in Diaz’s cross from the rebound with his second.

However, VAR ruled that in closing down the goalkeeper, the ball had come off his arm.

But the equaliser was not long in arriving as Leverkusen captain Robert Andrich’s misplaced square pass went straight to Michael Olise, who slid in Diaz to confidently slot past Blaswich.

Kane fired wide from 35 yards and Olise saw his effort saved by Blaswich as Bayern pushed for the winner only for Diaz’s 84th-minute dismissal to end those hopes.

Hofmann’s deflected shot looped over goalkeeper Sven Ulreich in the third minute of added time only for VAR to intervene again.
