Nearly three-quarters of the MLB regular season is in the books. Each series becomes more crucial in the final run towards the postseason. There are ten games scheduled for August 10. I will focus on four games to make picks, with the Braves hosting the Mets in an NL East battle headlining the action.
New York Mets versus Atlanta Braves
In this NL East battle, the Braves sit first in the division, while the Mets are a distant 19.5 games behind. New York is “burning hot” after winning four straight, while the Braves are also playing well, 5-1 over the last six and “burning hot down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The teams are trending on opposite sides of the “over/under” line with a total of 13 runs predicted with 69 percent confidence. The Braves have a big scoring differential edge of +120 to -44. Christian Scott is scheduled to pitch for the Mets. He has been an excellent bet at +$477 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. The Mets have won six of the 10 games between the teams this season. Atlanta is one of the best teams in the league at home, at 39-20, and New York is 26-32 on the road. After an inconsistent stretch in June, the Braves have rebounded to be one of the more consistent teams in the league. I like them at home, but will pass on the “over/under” bet.
Philadelphia Phillies versus St. Louis Cardinals
The Phillies are second in the NL East and hold a 3.5-game lead over the Cardinals in the wild card race. The Cardinals are “burning hot” versus “average” on the Team Strength Oscillator, and the Phillies are +22 to +21 on the Power Ranks Indicator. The Phillies have been involved in games “over” the line in five of the last six, while the Cardinals have been in games “under” in all but one during the same stretch. The Phillies are +1 to -9 in scoring differential, and by far the more stable team, at +30 to +2 on the Team Volatility Oscillator. The Phillies have a better road record (32-26) than the Cardinals do at home (29-32). This is the first meeting between the teams this season. I will go with the Phillies on the road, but pass on the “over/under” bet.
Baltimore Orioles versus Minnesota Twins
Both teams are 2-4 over the last six games, although the Twins are in a better position, just two games out in the AL Central. The Orioles have dug themselves a 13.5-game hole in the AL East. Thanks to winning the last two, the Twins are “average up” versus “ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator, and +14 to +4 on the Power Ranks Indicator. Both teams are far in the red in scoring differential, and moderately consistent regarding their favorite/underdog status. The Orioles are 24-30 on the road, while the Twins are a respectable 30-27 at home. This is the first meeting between the teams since the opening series of the season. I like the Twins at home to keep pace in the division in a game “under” the line.
Houston Astros versus San Francisco Giants
Here’s a game with two teams heading in opposite directions. The Astros are 4-2 over the last six, and first place in the AL West. The Giants are 2-4 over the last six, and 4th in the NL West. Houston is “average up” versus “ice cold up” on the Team Strength Oscillator, and +20 to +3 on the Power Ranks Indicator. The teams are trending on opposite sides of the “over/under” line, and both teams are in the red in scoring differential. Houston is remarkably consistent, at two games over .500 both at home and on the road, while San Francisco is 27-27 at home. One thing worth noting is that the Astros are -7 on the Team Volatility Oscillator, making them extremely unstable, particularly for a team high in the playoff race. I like the Giants at home in a game “under” the line.
