Nevada added 3,800 jobs in June, lifting total nonfarm employment to a record high as hiring in the Las Vegas metropolitan area offset declines elsewhere. However, the state’s unemployment rate remained among the highest in the United States.
Seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment rose to a record 1,614,100 in June, up 3,800 jobs from May and 36,700 jobs, or 2.3%, from a year earlier, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR). The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate edged down to 5.1% from 5.2% in May but remained above the national rate of 4.2%.
The latest figures extend Nevada’s run as the fastest-growing state for employment, with the state leading the nation in year-over-year job growth for 11 consecutive months.
“Over the past year, Nevada has added jobs at a brisk pace, and that trend continued in June with over 2% growth in jobs over the past year,” DETR Chief Economist David Schmidt said.
“The labor force participation rate and unemployment rate both decreased, matching the changes in the national rates this month. Overall, the state’s labor market remained on a solid footing in June.“
The Las Vegas metropolitan area accounted for most of the state’s job gains, adding 3,000 jobs, or 0.3%, from May and 25,600 jobs, or 2.2%, from a year earlier. Total employment in the Las Vegas area reached a record 1,178,100 jobs, the highest level on record for Southern Nevada.
Statewide, the leisure and hospitality sector added 1,700 jobs in June, while education and health services gained 700 jobs. Trade, transportation and utilities lost 800 jobs during the month, while professional and business services shed 700 jobs.
Elsewhere, the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area lost 600 jobs from May, although employment remained 1.5% higher than a year earlier. Carson City lost 100 jobs during the month and was down 0.6% from June 2025.
The statewide employment gains coincided with a modest recovery in Las Vegas tourism. Visitor volume reached 16.5 million through May, up 0.3%, or 46,300 visitors, from the same period a year earlier, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. However, the city welcomed 38.5 million visitors in 2025, down 7.5% from 2024.
State and regional officials have continued efforts to diversify Southern Nevada’s economy beyond tourism, seeking to attract higher-paying industries and reduce reliance on the leisure and hospitality sector.
A strategic plan released by the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance said the region remained “heavily concentrated in leisure and hospitality, leaving the region vulnerable to economic disruption and limiting long-term wage growth and resilience.”
