Nüwa at City of Dreams Sri Lanka has received a five-star classification from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), giving formal recognition to the hotel located within the Colombo integrated resort.

The five-star status was presented at a recent event attended by representatives of City of Dreams Sri Lanka, Cinnamon Life, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, and the Ministry of Tourism. The discussion focused on the classification process, the structure of the resort, and the role of Nüwa within the wider City of Dreams property.

Michael Habashi, General Manager of City of Dreams Sri Lanka, said the resort had been designed to bring a variety of visitor experiences together in Colombo, and highlighted that the property includes luxury shopping, restaurants, and casino facilities. Habashi also said City of Dreams Sri Lanka hopes to contribute to the country’s target of attracting 3 million tourists this year.

Nüwa is a hotel brand that also operates in Macau and Manila, two markets associated with large-scale integrated resorts and gaming-led tourism. Its Sri Lankan property has 113 rooms and suites and operates alongside Cinnamon Life within the same Colombo development.

Nüwa Hotel Manager Thakshila Galappaththy said the brand was built around “sophistication, quality, and innovation.” He said the hotel had recruited 168 employees after interviewing around 500 candidates, indicating that they picked the ‘best’ to meet the service standards. According to him, this is particularly relevant because the hotel is targeting higher-spending guests.

The classification also presented an unusual case for the tourism authority because Nüwa and Cinnamon Life operate within the same resort premises. SLTDA Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam said the authority had to assess the property within the existing hotel classification framework. “This is the first time two 5-star hotels are located within the same premises,” he said.

Cinnamon Life General Manager Kamal Munasinghe said the certification process was demanding and that the challenge would continue after the rating was granted. “One thing is getting the certification. The other thing is maintaining it,” he said.
