- The Ohio Casino Control Commission moved a sports betting rule change forward to ban credit cards for sports betting deposits
- The sports betting rule amendment went through a public comment process
- Commission staff will now go through a formal filing process of the rule change and bring it back for final approval at a later date
Ohio is now a step closer to officially banning credit cards to fund sports betting accounts.
The Ohio Casino Control Commission today unanimously moved a sports betting rule change forward to prohibit credit cards as means to fund an online sports betting account. While the statewide ban has yet to be officially approved, several major sports betting operators in the Buckeye State already prohibit credit cards for account deposits.
The new prohibition will not effect licensed Ohio fantasy sports contest operators.
If approved, Ohio will be the tenth with legalized sports betting to ban credit cards to fund sports betting accounts. The Ohio Casino Control Commission introduced and approved the amendment on first reading in early May, with the rule change then moving through a public comment process.
The public comment window closed on Friday, May 15.
Craig Donahue, deputy executive director and director of regulatory compliance for the Ohio Casino Control Commission, today reported no substantive public comments were received. DraftKings asked for a small technical change to the amendment, he said, but had no problem with the ban.
In fact, DraftKings already has a nationwide credit card ban in place to fund sports betting accounts. FanDuel, Fanatics Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook, and bet365 also feature similar credit card prohibitions for customer accounts, while BetMGM announced in May it would begin phasing out these types of account deposits as well.
Donahue reported the Ohio Casino Control Commission staff will now begin the formal filing process and bring the sports betting rule change back at a later day for a final vote.
Currently, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia all have prohibitions on credit card account deposits.
Fantasy Contest Operators Not Included
Among the public comments were two from licensed Ohio daily fantasy sports contests operators, Donahue said. The operators expressed concerns that the prohibition would include their customers as well.
The Ohio Casino Control Commission noted it is “comfortable” not including licensed fantasy contest operators in this credit card prohibition. If the rule does go into effect, it will not be extended to licensed daily fantasy contest operators in the state.
