PGA Championship H2H Picks & Best Bets

It’s the eve of the PGA Championship, and while your outright wagers have probably already been placed, that doesn’t mean the aren’t more bets to make. I’m looking to attack the Head-to-Head matchups market, with my primary target to pick on being a former champion of this event.

Below, I’ve listed my two favorite PGA Championship H2H picks and best bets, plus the reasoning behind each selection.

PGA Championship H2H Picks

My favorite matchup bet this week is Ludvig Aberg over Xander Schauffele at +102 odds. Xander has been bleeding strokes on and around the greens this season, and you simply aren’t going to compete this week if you’re not rolling a hot putter. I’m also betting Rickie Fowler over Patrick Cantlay at +105 odds. Fowler enters in pristine form and few players in the tournament have as much history at Aronimink as him.

PGA Championship Best Bets #1: Ludvig Aberg Over Xander Schauffele

• Ludvig Aberg Over Xander Schauffele (+102 at DraftKings)

Let’s start with the Aberg vs Schauffele H2H pick. These players are both coming off polar opposite performances, and while Aberg is trending in the right direction, Xander is going the wrong way.

The Swede closed the Final Round of the Truist Championship with a blistering 5-under, 66, tied for the second best round of the day, behind only Fowler. Aberg enters the week having gained the sixth most total strokes in the field over the last month, and has been hitting his irons better than everyone not named Alex Fitzpatrick.

That’s key this week, because his elite driving distance is going to give him plenty of scoring opportunities with his irons. Aronimink is reportedly in pristine shape, but there’s talk on the grounds that many of the course’s defenses won’t come into play for guys like Aberg who boast supreme length. A frost wave stunted the growth of the rough, so even if he’s a little wayward off the tee, it won’t stop him from hitting the ball close.

Once on the green, he can really separate from the 2024 PGA Champion. Aberg ranks 34th in the field in putting over the last month, and has gained strokes with the flat stick in six of his past eight starts. Schauffele meanwhile, has been the exact opposite. He’s lost strokes on and around the green in three straight events. Normally, he can overcome those issues with his ball striking but even that’s been off. Xander lost nearly a stroke to the field last week ball striking on his way to a 60th place finish in a 72 man field.

PGA Championship Best Bets #2: Rickie Fowler Over Patrick Cantlay

• Rickie Fowler Over Patrick Cantlay (+105 at bet365)

Onto Fowler now, who enters the tournament on the heels of three straight top-10’s in signature events. That includes a runner-up finish last week at Quail Hollow, where he held the lead on the back 9 on Sunday.

Fowler is one of the few players who’s played this track every time since the Tour has been here since 2010. He finished T-8 at the BMW Championship when it was contested at Aronimink in 2018, and also owns two top-8 results at previous PGA Championships. Fowler ranks sixth in the field in total strokes gained over the last month, fourth in iron play, and 15th on the greens.

Cantlay meanwhile, has played much better over the last two months, but he’s been a non-factor in the bulk of his most recent Major appearances. He’s missed the cut in three of his past four Majors, and has only one top-10 result in his last 11 Major tournaments.

A big reason for his struggles on the big stage is his putting. Cantlay is one of the best lag putters on Tour, but one of the worst putters from inside 10-feet. That means he doesn’t convert nearly enough birdie looks, and with Major Championship final scores almost always in the mid to high teens under par, Cantaly hasn’t been able to compete.
