PowerPlay has confirmed its entry into Alberta, ahead of the province’s July 13 regulated iGaming launch. The company called the move the next step in its national growth strategy, following its presence in Ontario, where it operates as an AGCO-registered sportsbook.

The Province of Alberta has taken legislative steps toward opening its digital wagering sector through the passage of the iGaming Alberta Act (Bill 48) in 2025, which established the legal framework for a competitive, privately operated online gambling market.

The legislation enables licensed private operators to enter the province under provincial oversight, moving Alberta toward a model similar to Ontario’s regulated iGaming system.

“Alberta players want a licensed, local sportsbook built around how Canadians actually think, bet, and engage, and that’s exactly what PowerPlay is,” says Thomas Vermeulen, Marketing Director at PowerPlay. “We’re not a global brand parachuting into this market chasing a new revenue line. The province has progressed through key regulatory milestones in 2025 and 2026, including the publication of operational standards and the opening of operator registration processes.

Alberta’s regulated market is expected to launch in mid- 2026, with July 13 identified as the official go-live date, marking the start of licensed private sportsbook and casino operators alongside the existing provincial platform. 

Against this backdrop, PowerPlay stated that it is positioning itself to enter Alberta as soon as licensing and onboarding processes are completed.

The expansion will be subject to final regulatory approvals from provincial authorities and completion of commercial onboarding requirements.

Alberta becomes the second province to open a competitive, regulated iGaming market in Canada.
