- The San Antonio Spurs are heavy favorites in Game 2 of their series vs the Portland Trail Blazers
- Victor Wembanyama set a franchise record for points in a playoff debut with 35 in Game 1
- Read below for the latest Trail Blazers vs Spurs odds, prediction and best bets
It was an electrifying playoff debut for Victor Wembanyama, who set a franchise record for points in a playoff debut as his San Antonio Spurs (62-20, 32-8 home) took Game 1 of their best-of-7 series against the Portland Trail Blazers (42-40, 18-23 away).
His follow-up is to take a stranglehold of this series before the venue shifts to the Moda Center in the Pacific Northwest.
The sportsbooks again see the Spurs in another class, making them heavy favorites again in the NBA odds.
Tip-off is scheduled Tuesday at 8pm ET from the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, with NBA and Peacock carrying the live broadcast.
Trail Blazers vs Spurs Odds
The graphic above shows the best available odds, which are subject to change
The Spurs are a heavy favorite to win Game 2, getting an extremely short -649 on the moneyline at DraftKings, who also have them as an 11.5-point favorite, paying out at -105 odds.
If you think Portland squares things up, you can get some nice +500 odds from bet365 for an outright win. They’re also getting -105 odds from Caesars to cover the 11.5-point spread.
The total is set at 225 points, with the Over paying at -106 odds at DraftKings, and -108 at FanDuel.
Trail Blazers vs Spurs Prediction
Full credit to the Spurs, who showed exactly why they’re considered a Top 3 contender in the latest NBA Championship odds.
Wembanyama amazed in his first appearance against Portland this season, lighting them up for 35 points on a crisp 13-for-21 shooting, including 5-for-6 from 3-point range.
While the freshly minted DPOY had just two blocks, Wemby was the centrepiece of a defense that held the Trail Blazers to just 43% shooting for the game, and a rough 10-for-38 from 3-point range, a 26% clip.
Perhaps the most encouraging sign for the Spurs was there were plenty of contributors vs just a one-man show. Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox added 17 points each, with Devin Vassell had 15 and Luke Kornet came off the bench for 10.
My Trail Blazers vs Spurs pick isn’t predicting an upset, but just that a young team like Portland, many who had yet to experience a raucous playoff atmosphere, will be better adjusted in Game 2, and should take advantage of those points.
While San Antonio did build large leads in Game 1, it only ended in a 111-98 score, with Portland a couple of buckets away from covering.
Deni Avdija led the Blazers with 30 points, 10 boards and five assists, but Scoot Henderson was the only other starter in double figures with 18.
Robert Williams (11) and Shaedon Sharpe (10) did offer some help off the bench, but on a team with very few shot makers, veterans Jrue Holiday (4-for-15, 9 points) and Jerami Grant (2-for-6, 5 points, -25) weren’t able to stabilize the Portland attack, which seemed disjointed and unsure. They’ll simply need to be better.
But Portland is a resilient bunch, going 23-17-0 against the spread after a loss, which is a Top 10 mark in the NBA, while San Antonio is 32-28-2 ATS after picking up a win.
During the regular season, Portland scored less than 100 points in a loss 10 times, and came back to win the next game six times, while scoring at least 117 points the next game five times. I like them to hang around in a game that comes down to the wire in Game 2.
Trail Blazers vs Spurs Best Bets
Pick 1: Scoot Henderson OVER 10.5 Points (+100 at bet365)
Scoot Henderson looked very much like the guy picked third in the 2023 NBA Draft in Game 1 – or maybe it’s just the Spurs? In eight career games vs San Antonio, he’s scored at least 11 points six times. I expect him to be a competent contributor again Tuesday.
Pick 2: Victor Wembanyama UNDER 11.5 Rebounds (+100 at bet365)
Wemby picked up five rebounds and against Portland, just the second time in the last nine he’s gone for less than 13 rebounds in a game. Like Scoot, maybe it’s just the matchup: Wembanyama has grabbed 12 boards just once in six career games vs the Blazers.
