- The Diamondbacks are heavy favorites as they begin a four-game set vs the Rockies
- The pitching matchup of Zach Agnos vs Eduardo Rodriguez provides a stark contrast
- See why I’m backing the home squad in my Rockies vs Diamondbacks picks and predictions
The Arizona Diamondbacks (25-23) welcome the Colorado Rockies (19-31) to Chase Field for the first game of their series on Thursday at 6:40 PM PT / 9:40 PM ET. The game will be broadcast locally on Rockies.TV and DBACKS.TV. Entering this matchup as clear home favorites in the MLB odds, the Diamondbacks are looking to continue their momentum which has seen them win four straight.
These two NL West rivals met for a three-game set just last week in Colorado, with the D-Backs taking two affairs. Continue reading for my analysis for tonight’s tilt and why I believe the home squad will emerge victorious.
Rockies vs Diamondbacks Prediction & Best Bets
The Diamondbacks hold a distinct advantage across the board and to get a bit more juice out of this matchup, I’m going with them to win by two or more runs. The most glaring mismatch lies on the mound. Arizona sends Eduardo Rodriguez to the bump. He has been sensational this season with a 2.53 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP over 53.1 innings. The Rockies will rely on Zach Agnos, who has struggled mightily, posting a 5.59 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP.
Offensively, Arizona boasts the superior lineup with a .715 team OPS. They’ve also taken a whopping 18 of the last 21 games vs Colorado in their home ball park.
Though Rodriguez has been highly effective at preventing runs, he isn’t an overpowering strikeout artist. He posts a modest 6.58 K/9 rate and averages roughly 5.9 innings per start. The math suggests he will land closer to four or five strikeouts. In seven of nine starts, he’s thrown for five or fewer strikeouts.
Zach Agnos vs Eduardo Rodriguez
Rodriguez is consistently providing length, averaging nearly six innings per start. While he lacks elite strikeout numbers, he excels at inducing weak contact. Agnos has strictly operated out of the bullpen this season and will likely serve as an opener.
Take a look at the MLB batter vs pitcher stats for additional information to glean on before wagering on the Rockies vs Diamondbacks this evening.
COL vs ARI Team Stats
Arizona is highly productive at Chase Field, scoring nearly five runs per game. This spells trouble for a pitching staff ranking 29th in WHIP. Colorado simply allows too many baserunners. Conversely, the visiting lineup struggles to generate threatening contact away from Coors Field, ranking 29th in average exit velocity at 86.7 mph.
