Many bettors who watched Sunday’s Buffalo Bills game against the Patriots in the snow in New England were no doubt left wondering where NFL MVP odds were drifting after Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen put the team on his back down 21-0 and led them to a 35-31 win.
Allen finished the game 19/28, for 193 yards and three touchdowns, adding 48 yards in rushing to that. Allen is arguably the best talent in the league now. The Bills (10-4) are making a run at the AFC East title, picking up a game on the first place Patriots (11-3).
Both teams have three games left to play, with the Bills having the easier of the schedules. The Bills are in Cleveland to take on the Browns Sunday, followed by home games against the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets. The Patriots are looking at road games against the Ravens in Baltimore and the Jets in New York, before wrapping up the season at home against the Miami Dolphins.
Maye’s Odds Took a Hit
BetMGM shared some up-to-date stats this morning. The Patriots remain betting favourites to win the AFC East, generating the highest in bets (44.9%) and handle (49.3%) out of the four division teams.
We saw wild up-and-down movement in the Bills/Patriots game on the MVP market, with the Patriots taking a big lead early,” said Joey Feazel, Head of Football at Caesars Sportsbook. “The Bills were able to fight back and come out ahead, thus improving Josh Allen’s MVP run, and Drake Maye’s taking a hit with an uneventful second half.”
Big Bills Comeback
Maye had an opportunity to lead the Patriots back late in the game but couldn’t get it done. He finished the game 14/23 for 155 yards. Maye was excellent in the first half, including a pair of TD runs, building up that seemingly insurmountable lead. Buffalo punted on all but one of its first-half possessions. The second half was a different story, though.
According to a spokesperson from theScore Bet: Allen is third in MVP odds behind Los Angeles Rams’ QB Matthew Stafford and Maye (as has been the case the last few weeks). He’s got the third most handle wagered since games started Sunday (11.1%), just behind Maye (11.2%) while Stafford has 55.1% of all handle in that time.
Stafford Tosses for 350+
Allen does have the most bets in that time however, with 29.6% to Bo Nix’s 17.4%, Maye’s 13.6% and Stafford’s 10.6% of bets.
So, it looks like the money and odds aren’t favoring Allen.
“Matthew Stafford had an excellent day with 350+ Passing Yards and two passing TDs (beating the Detroit Lions 41-34), further cementing his position as a favorite,” added Feazel from Caesars.
A quick scan at sportsbooks this morning shows that odds have tightened. At DraftKings Stafford remains the favourite at -300, followed by Maye at +425, then Allen at +550. At Caesars Sportsbooks it’s Stafford at -280, Maye at +425, then Allen at +500. At FanDuel it’s Stafford -260, Maye +380, and Allen +600.
Three-Man Race for NFL MVP
At this stage of the season, there are three clear and legitimate contenders in the MVP race,” said Johnny Avello, the Las Vegas bookmaker, and Director of Race & Sportsbook at DraftKings. “Matthew Stafford remains the odds-on favorite to capture his first MVP award, but Drake Maye has been outstanding throughout the year. Josh Allen continues to build momentum after leading back-to-back comeback victories.
“Stafford is well positioned to potentially secure the award on Thursday night in a marquee matchup against Seattle. We’ll be closely monitoring both Maye and Allen and adjusting the odds accordingly as the season unfolds.”
It’s going to be interesting to watch through Christmas. Allen always seems to emerge in the snowy, colder conditions. The Rams remain Super Bowl betting favourites, at +310, with the Seattle Seahawks next at +650, then the Denver Broncos at +800. The Bills are also at +800. The Kansas City Chiefs were officially eliminated from the playoffs, with QB Patrick Mahomes undergoing surgery for a torn ACL yesterday.
