Michael “Texas Mike” Moncek brought the action to the Million Dollar Game, but it cost him a pot worth nearly $2 million.
The high roller from the University of Texas came to gamble in the $1 million buy-in High Stakes Live stream at the World Series of Poker (WSOP), put on by Hustler Casino Live. He showed up late, and quickly made his presence felt, especially in a hand against Eric Wasserson that will have poker fans talking for a while.
Gambling for Nearly $2 Million
The hand, in a straddled pot, began with Chang Lee (Jack) calling $14,000 from the big blind with J♦9♣. Texas Mike, the first straddle, made it $92,000 to go with A♣K♠. “Wass” then three-bet to $240,000 with Q♠Q♦. Jack folded, but Texas Mike decided to move all in for $948,000, a move that received a snap-call.
“You want to run it once?” Wasserson asked.
“Yeah,” Moncek responded.
There would be no splitting of the pot with the players agreeing to run the board out once. A race for $1,933,000 would ensue. The board came out 5♦10♣2♣9♠9♦, sending the entire pot over to Wasserson.
Texas Mike bought back in after losing the near-$2 million race. At the time of publishing, Santhosh Suvarna left the game down $1 million after losing a big pot to Alan Keating, who entered the game late.
Martin Kabrhel was another late entry after he was eliminated from the WSOP $100,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold’em. Kabrhel, perhaps getting out of line in a hand he wasn’t involved in, teased Wasserson, who had just placed a $300,000 wager against Jack on the river with a straight, for being a “nit.”
“Eric, I can say same about you. I know you are a big nit. But, like, so far, you are okay. No, he’s the biggest nit I know. I just don’t understand why you’re here. No, really, no action, not even go to the barber,” Kabrhel, who wasn’t in the hand, told Wasserson while Jack contemplated a call or fold with two pair on a board that had four cards to a straight.
Jack did make the call and lost a $1,037,000 pot to Wass, who was up $2.3 million at the time. Texas Mike would get some of his losses back against Kabrhel with trips beating top pair for an $855,000 pot.
