In a casino game of blackjack, the objective is to beat the dealer by having a hand total closer to 21 than the dealer’s hand, without exceeding 21 (busting). Players compete only against the dealer, not against each other.
Card Values
2 through 10: Face value.
Jack, Queen, King: 10 points.
Ace: 1 or 11 points, whichever is more favorable to the hand. A hand with an Ace valued at 11 is called a “soft” hand (e.g., Ace and 6 is “soft 17”), and one without is a “hard” hand.
Basic Gameplay
The game begins with players placing bets before receiving two cards face up. The dealer gets two cards, one visible (“upcard”) and one hidden (“hole card”). Players take turns deciding how to play their hand using hand signals. They can “hit” to take another card or “stand” to keep their current hand. Going over 21 is a “bust” and results in a loss. After players complete their turns, the dealer reveals their hole card and must follow specific rules for hitting or standing, usually hitting on 16 or less and standing on 17 or more, though this can vary (e.g., hitting on soft 17). Finally, hands are compared. Players win by having a higher total than the dealer without busting, resulting in an even money payout. A tie is a “push,” and the bet is returned. If the dealer busts, remaining players win.
Player Options
Key actions include “Blackjack” (a natural 21) which typically pays 3 to 2. Players can “Double Down” by doubling their bet for one more card, or “Split Pairs” of same-value cards into two hands with a second bet. “Insurance” is a side bet offered if the dealer shows an Ace, paying 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack, but is generally not recommended. Some casinos allow “Surrender,” letting a player forfeit half their bet to end the hand.
Players can use a basic strategy chart to understand the optimal play for every hand, minimizing the house edge.
