As Alberta gears up for its expanded Canada online sports betting launch, theScore Bet today announced that users can begin registering accounts in the province.
theScore Bet online sportsbook announced today it is now available for pre-registration in Alberta ahead of the province’s new regulated online gaming market launch. Users can now download theScore Bet platform and register accounts in Alberta.
“theScore is Canada’s premier digital sports media brand and we can’t wait to bring our best-in-class sportsbook and casino app theScore Bet to Alberta,” said Billy Turchin, Chief Product Officer, PENN Interactive. “We commend the Alberta government on all their efforts towards bringing regulated online gaming operators to the Province and look forward to introducing Albertans to our integrated media and betting offering when the market opens.”
Alberta Gearing Up For Launch
According to theScore Bet, the company plans to launch in Alberta subject to all regulatory approvals when the province officially opens its markets to the public. theScore Bet is now available on both iOS and Android for download.
Several platforms have already opened up pre-registration in Alberta. theScore Bet also joins BetRivers, owned by Rush Street Interactive, and PointsBet in the province.
While a launch date for online sports betting and iGaming has yet to be set in the province, the new rules promulgated by Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis (AGLC) sets the necessary framework and requirements for operators to receive a license. These new regulations pave the way for operators such as DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics Sportsbook to do business in Alberta, much like they currently do in Ontario.
Nally noted in an interview with the Edmonton Journal he expects to see the market go live in “a few months.”
Nally’s bill was approved last spring and is loosely based on Ontario’s legalization model. It allows for multiple private-sector operators to do business in Alberta, allowing those operating in the gray market to license themselves in the province. It also establishes the Alberta iGaming Corporation to regulate, license, and oversee the operations of iGaming.
Only One Legal Operator Currently
PlayAlberta is currently the only legal Alberta sports betting app and regulated iGaming site in the province, it is not necessarily the only operator currently in the province. A number of operators are currently offering gaming in Alberta as part of the gray market, where they offer their games to Canadian sports bettors and customers but the government collects no tax revenues from their services.
Under the bill, licensed operators will have to pay 20% of net gaming revenue to the province, while keeping the remaining 80%.
