Uplatform guide: Conversion is a clue, not the answer

It’s been a long week. I sat listening to the drum of rain. I have spent a long time in rooms where a single number goes up, and that’s it; everyone is happy. It doesn’t pause the further investigation; it outright stops it. The number is good, so the work is done. Nobody asks what it passed on the way there. Or what it left behind.

This goddamn number is almost always conversion.

Now to be frank: Conversion is not wrong. It is just an accurate record of a single moment: someone arrived, did the thing they were supposed to do, it gets recorded, and that’s it. What it cannot tell you is what happened next. Whether the cost of finding them made any sense versus what they turned out to be worth. Whether the business was getting stronger, or just getting busier.

Busy and strong look identical on a Tuesday morning dashboard. However, somewhere down the line, months later, trust me – they feel very different.

After several victims, we started working on this case file. Operators who ran the campaigns, read the reports, and then moved on, only to find themselves looking at numbers, weeks later, that went against the story they had been told all this time.
