The third major of the golf season begins this Thursday as the best players in the world arrive at Shinnecock Hills for the US Open.
Scottie Scheffler has the chance to become the seventh male golfer to win the Career Grand Slam by winning his maiden US Open crown this Sunday.
Elsewhere, there is a whole host of players capable of challenging the American. Will there be a familiar winner? Or can someone follow Aaron Rai in becoming another first-time major winner this week?
Here are three players to consider if you are eyeing an outright winner bet on the 2026 US Open.

Three best each-way bets
Rory to win major number seven?
While Scheffler may be the overwhelming favourite at Shinnecock this week, McIlroy’s odds of 10/1 are far too appealing to turn down.
He hasn’t won since triumphing at Augusta, but he did secure another major top-ten at Aronimink last month in the PGA Championship. After 54 holes, the Northern Irishman was sitting just three shots behind the leader.
He couldn’t really get going on Sunday, however, but it was another solid showing in a major. Two weeks ago, he finished T12 at the Memorial and he is trending in the right direction.
With his major drought well and truly smashed after winning back-to-back Masters titles, McIlroy will be desperate to add more to his collection.
Tip 1: Rory McIlroy @ 10/1
Cameron Young eyeing first major win at Shinnecock
The New York native will enjoy playing in front of home crowds, just as he did during the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
It is a matter of when, not if, Young wins a major championship and this week is as good as any. He has won the Players and Cadillac Championships so far in 2026, while finishing T3 at the Masters in April.
Ranking sixth for Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green on the PGA Tour, Young has been excellent off the tee this season, although his putting has let him down on several occasions.
Should he turn hot on the putting surface this week though, Young will have a fantastic chance to win a major title in his home state.
Tip 2: Cameron Young @ 20/1
Cameron Smith could improve on PGA Championship showing
After missing six major cuts in succession, Cameron Smith finished T7 at the PGA Championship in what was an excellent week at Aronimink for the Australian.
He has endured his struggles, but is he now trending upwards? He finished T5 at LIV Golf Andalucia on a notoriously tough Valderama course and this was certainly excellent preparation for him ahead of the US Open.
Smith has two fourth-place finishes at the US Open during his career, in 2015 and 2023, and we shouldn’t look too much into the fact that he missed the cut at Shinnecock in 2018.
Should he play as well as he did at Aronimink in New York this week, Smith could challenge, especially if his short game is hot.
Tip 3: Cameron Smith @ 80/1
