The United States men’s national team (USMNT) advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, a result that delivered major payouts to bettors and produced unprecedented wagering activity at sportsbooks.
Operators across the country reported overwhelming support for the American side before kickoff. The outcome rewarded those wagers and created what Caesars Sports described as the most heavily engaged soccer betting event in the company’s history.
“The U.S. men’s national team match against Bosnia and Herzegovina was a record-breaking event and the most-engaged soccer event in Caesars Sports history. It’s fair to say we have plenty of happy bettors this evening,” said Mark Bickerdike, Caesars Sports head of soccer trading, according to FOX Sports.
The latest betting surge continued a trend that has followed the U.S. team throughout the tournament. Since the group stage began in June, sportsbooks have repeatedly reported strong customer interest in matches involving the host nation.
Record Numbers Follow U.S. Victory
Caesars said Wednesday’s knockout-stage match established new company records in several categories, including total betting volume, wager count, and the number of unique customers placing bets.
“It generated our highest soccer handle ever, the most wagers placed on a soccer event in our book’s history, and the highest number of unique customers wagering,” Bickerdike said. “That’s obviously very encouraging, and we hope to see that momentum continue into the Round of 16 matchup.”
According to Caesars, bettors heavily favored the Americans throughout the contest. The sportsbook reported that 91% of the handle in the match betting market backed the USMNT. Interest extended to qualification markets as well, where 87% of the money was placed on the United States to move into the next round.
“The USA looked convincing throughout and were good value for their victory,” Bickerdale said. “From the book’s perspective, it helped to have Christian Pulisic’s goal ruled out from a results standpoint, as he was heavily backed in the anytime goalscorer market. We also avoided a significant payout in the total goals market, with the match finishing with just two goals.”
The victory also extended a successful tournament for bettors who have consistently backed Team USA. The team entered the Bosnia match as a substantial favorite and delivered another win, helping fuel enthusiasm ahead of the next knockout round.
Sportsbooks Look Ahead to Belgium Showdown
While the Bosnia result created short-term losses for sportsbooks due to public support for the U.S., bookmakers believe the next match could attract even greater attention.
Before the Round of 32 contest, SuperBook vice president John Murray acknowledged that Bosnia advancing would have been a favorable outcome for the sportsbook. Once the United States secured the win, however, attention quickly shifted to the upcoming matchup with Belgium.
“The USA advancing is not a good immediate result,” Murray said late Wednesday night. “But it sets up a fantastic Monday night match in primetime. USA vs. Belgium is gonna be huge. Action certainly spiked with tonight’s game. It was the most-bet game, and I don’t know why Monday wouldn’t be bigger.”
BetMGM trading manager Adair Horne expects similar betting patterns. “I’m fairly confident the next game will be one of our biggest liabilities of the tournament, and the most-bet-game,” Horne said.
Murray also predicted another significant increase in wagering activity. “It’s the USA’s biggest game ever played on U.S. soil. Action will be a lot heavier than USA-Belgium.”
BetMGM’s initial odds reflected how evenly matched the teams appear. In the three-way moneyline market, both the United States and Belgium opened at +160, while a draw was listed at +230. In the market determining which team reaches the quarterfinals regardless of when the match is decided, Belgium held a slight edge at -115 compared with -110 for the Americans. Another report noted Team USA as a slight -122 favorite to advance.
Futures Market Reacts Despite Balogun Suspension Concern
The American victory came with a significant complication. Leading scorer Folarin Balogun scored during the match but later received a controversial red card. His expected suspension for the Belgium game creates a challenge for the U.S. squad heading into the Round of 16.
Even so, sportsbooks shortened the team’s World Cup championship odds following the win.
At Caesars, the United States opened the tournament at +5000 to win the World Cup. Those odds improved to +4000 after a 4-1 victory over Paraguay and then to +3000 following a 2-0 result against Australia. After a 3-2 defeat to Türkiye in the final group-stage match, the number remained at +3000. Following the win over Bosnia, the Americans moved to +2500 and became the sportsbook’s seventh choice to lift the trophy.
