Brettski had walked the Enchanted Forest a hundred times, but tonight the trees glowed like they were holding secrets. Lantern-light flickered between the branches as he strolled beside his two best friends: Rack’em Stack’em Robby, counting invisible chips with every step, and Brownie the GOAT, trotting confidently ahead like he’d already seen the ending.
That’s when the music started.
Calliope notes floated through the fog, followed by laughter that didn’t sound human. They pushed past the trees and found a traveling circus pitched in a moonlit clearing—striped tents, fire spinners, acrobats twisting through the air. A sign swung overhead: ONE NIGHT ONLY.
Curious turned to suspicious when Brettski noticed the clowns weren’t juggling pins—they were shuffling cards. Inside the main tent, roulette wheels spun beside cotton candy machines. Slot reels clanked behind velvet curtains. The ringmaster smiled too wide.
“Welcome,” he purred, “to the greatest casino never meant to be found.”
Before anyone could object, Robby slapped a stack of chips on a blackjack table that looked carved from bone. Brownie hopped onto a stool and headbutted a lever on a slot machine shaped like a lion. Bells rang. Fire shot into the air. They were winning. Big.
Every hand Brettski played hit just right. Dealers whispered. The crowd grew silent. With each win, the lights dimmed lower, and the ringmaster’s grin tightened.
Then the table stopped paying.
The chips on the felt slowly turned black.
The ringmaster leaned in. “House rules,” he said softly. “To cash out… you must play one final game.”
The tent doors slammed shut.
And the wheel in the center of the circus began to spin—by itself.
