Poker pro Steven Jones will compete for over $4.5 million on the upcoming Squid Game: The Challenge reality TV game show.
The amount he could win, albeit massive, is less than the $6.5 million he secured for finishing second to Daniel Weinman in the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. But the challenge to get that money will likely be just as difficult as outlasting all but one of 10,043 entrants in a poker tournament.
Poker Pro Takes on New Challenge

Jones, an Arizona native, announced on social media that he’ll be a contestant starting Nov. 4 on the new Squid Game: The Challenge competition, playing for $4.56 million. The show’s second season will air exclusively on Netflix.
The game begins with 456 players, including the near-poker world champion. Squid Game: The Challenge is a British reality TV competition series based on the wildly popular drama series, Squid Game, a South Korean dystopian survival thrill drama series.
Unlike the fictional series, the players won’t die during the various challenges they must pass, or face elimination, to win life-changing money. But the contestants will undergo numerous physical and psychological challenges. Here’s a look at the Netflix trailer (Jones, Contestant 183, briefly appears at the 1:00 mark).
Season 1, which lasted 10 episodes, aired in late 2023 and became No. 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 English-language shows for the first two weeks after its release. More than 20 million people tuned in during the first week, and over 220 million watched within the first 21 days.
Jones isn’t the first poker player to compete on a popular reality TV game show. Robbi Jade Lew appeared last year on USA Network’s The Anonymous, but didn’t have much success. Coincidentally, her nemesis, Garrett Adelstein, is one of a few former Survivor contestants within the poker community.
