Senior executives from major American companies met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New York to discuss trade relations, investment conditions, and market access, with Wynn Resorts CEO Craig Billings among the participants.
The gathering brought together members of the US-China Business Council (USCBC), delegates from the National Committee on US-China Relations (NCUSCR), and representatives from academic and policy institutions. Discussions focused on issues affecting American businesses operating in China and the broader commercial relationship between the two countries.
Participants examined access to the Chinese market, competitive conditions for foreign companies, and the importance of maintaining a stable business environment. The meeting also included discussions on developments following the recent summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
Business Leaders Discuss Trade Environment
Billings attended the meeting in his role as a member of the USCBC Board of Directors. He joined several prominent executives representing industries ranging from insurance and pharmaceuticals to aviation and media.
Among those attending were USCBC Board Director and NCUSCR Executive Vice Chairman Evan G. Greenberg, who serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Chubb Limited; Merck & Co. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert M. Davis; The Estée Lauder Companies President and Chief Executive Officer Stéphane de La Faverie; Atlas Air Worldwide Chief Executive Officer Michael Steen; and Condé Nast Chief Executive Officer Roger Lynch.
The discussions centered on concerns that have long been raised by US companies operating in China. Participants highlighted the need for fair competition, greater market access, and clearer operating conditions for international businesses.
According to USCBC, executives also sought additional insight into agreements reached during the recent talks between the two countries’ leaders in Beijing.
USCBC President Sean Stein described the meeting as an opportunity for business representatives to engage directly on issues affecting their operations.
“Today’s meeting was an important opportunity to hear more about the important agreements reached by the two presidents in Beijing and to raise some of the most pressing issues affecting US business in China,” Stein said, as published on USCBC’s website.
Focus on Stability and Market Access
Business leaders emphasized the importance of predictability in the commercial relationship between the United States and China.
Many multinational companies continue to view China as a significant market, making discussions around regulation, market entry, and competitive conditions particularly important.
Stein said the recent dialogue between political leaders had helped reduce uncertainty.
“The consensus between President Trump and President Xi is bringing much needed stability and predictability to the relationship. We are now looking for the two sides to focus on the long-standing barriers and market access issues that harm business and undermine stability,” he added.
The meeting reflected ongoing efforts by the business community to maintain communication with policymakers as economic ties between the world’s two largest economies continue to evolve.
Importance for Wynn Resorts
For Wynn Resorts, participation in the discussions carries particular relevance due to the company’s substantial presence in Macau.
Billings serves not only as Chief Executive Officer of Wynn Resorts but also as Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of Wynn Macau Ltd. Through its Macau operations, the company manages the integrated resorts Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace.
China remains one of Wynn Resorts’ most important markets through its Macau business, making regulatory developments and broader US-China relations significant factors for the company.
Billings is one of several gaming industry representatives involved with USCBC. The council’s board also includes Las Vegas Sands Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Patrick Dumont.
Established in 1973, USCBC is a private, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization representing major American companies with business interests in China. For more than five decades, the organization has advocated on behalf of US businesses while promoting commercial engagement between the two countries.
The latest meeting in New York provided another forum for business leaders and government officials to exchange views on trade and investment issues at a time when companies continue to seek greater certainty regarding access, regulation, and long-term operating conditions in China.
