Disappointment reigned across the Great White North on Wednesday afternoon when Canada fell 2-1 to Switzerland and were relegated to second in the group.

There was something of a silver lining later in the evening, though, when South Africa upset South Korea (1-0) to claim second-place in Group A and set up a round of 32 tilt with the Canadians in Inglewood, CA, on Sunday, June 28.

Canada vs South Africa Odds

Despite the fact that they only won one group-stage game – against a Qatar team that was down to ten men early in the first half and nine early in the second – Canada has opened as a heavy favorite to win in regulation time.

The 3-way moneyline at bet365 lists Canada at -140 (58.33% implied win probability), South Africa at +460 (17.86%), and a 90-minute draw at +284 (26.04%).

The over/under has opened at 2.5 goals with -110 odds both ways.

Canada’s games averaged 3.67 GPG in the group stage (but that includes a 6-0 romp over Qatar). South Africa’s averaged just 1.67 and none of the three went over 2.5 goals.

Is Either Team a Threat to Make a Deep Run?

The latest odds to win the World Cup are not auspicious for either side. Despite the fact that one is guaranteed to be in the round of 16, Canada is trading at just 0.3¢ (+33233) to lift the trophy and South Africa at 0.1¢ (+), the lowest-possible price at prediction site Kalshi.

The table below lists the current top-ten favorites.

H2H History: CAN vs RSA

Canada and South Africa have only met once in history, and that came all the way back in 2007.

For what it’s worth (nothing), South Africa won 2-0 in that international friendly.

This marks the first time that either has made the knockout stage of a World Cup.
