Massachusetts sports betting handle and revenue totals were both down in May 2026 compared with April 2026 and May 2025 figures.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission reported $632.1 million in total sports betting handle in May, a decrease of more than $56 million from the previous month. Taxable revenues also decreased in May compared with April and 2025 totals.

Undoubtedly, the Massachusetts sports betting market suffered without a long NBA playoff run from the Boston Celtics, which suffered an unexpected first round playoff loss to the Philadelphia 76ers and only played one postseason game in May.

Sports Betting Down in May

According to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, the Commonwealth reported $632,109,678 in total sports betting handle for May. Online sports betting accounted for the vast majority of the sports betting action, coming in at $624.98 million, with retail sports betting notching just a little more than $7.1 million for the month.

Taxable gaming revenue came in at a total of $70,586,592 for May, totaling $14,091,494 in sports betting tax revenues for the month.

May was a down month of sports betting in the commonwealth, with its total handle decreasing by more than $46 million compared with April’s $678,382,514 sports betting total. Taxable gaming revenues also decreased in May by more than $11 million from April’s $81,772,049 taxable gaming revenue total.

It is a typically down period of time for Massachusetts sports betting, but it can typically be helped by a longer Boston Celtics playoff run. The second-seed Boston Celtics suffered a seven game series loss to the underdog seven-seed Philadelphia 76ers during the first round of the NBA playoffs. The majority of the series took place in April, with only the final seventh game being played in May.

In 2025, the Boston Celtics won its first round against the Orlando Magic in April in five games, but lost the Eastern Conference Semifinals in six games to the New York Knicks in May, which likely led to higher May 2025 sports betting totals. May 2025 sports betting handle came in $655.78 million, more than $23 million than May 2026, and taxable gaming revenues at $80.73 million. DraftKings reported $306.51 million in May sports betting handle total and $34.37 million in taxable revenue. FanDuel reported the second highest handle and taxable revenue totals for the month, at $158.65 million and $4.07 million, respectively.

Fanatics Sportsbook maintained its stranglehold on the third spot on the podium, reporting $70.46 million in handle and $7.28 million in taxable revenue for the month.
