- The annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, Brooklyn, is scheduled to take place on July 4th, with coverage beginning at noon ET on ESPN2; the contest will be shown live at 12:30 PM ET and simulcast on ABC
- While Joey Chestnut is the dominant force in Major League Eating in general and the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in particular, there are still lingering questions about the upcoming competition, such as how many hot dogs and buns Chestnut and his competitors will consume
- Prediction markets give users the option to trade not just on the outcome of the contest itself, but also on how many total hot dogs will be eaten
The Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, Brooklyn, has been held in various forms for more than a century. Nathan Handwerker founded the iconic brand and sold the signature product based on a family recipe. With the hot dog stand being stationed so close to the beach, the reasonable price at which they were sold, and the immigrant population that enjoyed the easy-to-eat delicacy, it quickly grew in popularity.
For years, there have been various contests to see how many people could eat in one sitting, but it is a relatively recent phenomenon that it has evolved into a worldwide spectacle.
Now, it is a massive, Super Bowl-style event with a global flair as people travel from all over the world to take part either as competitors or to attend the contest. In 2026, the 250th anniversary of American independence adds another layer to the pageantry. It’s about as American as it gets with the combination of an immigrant-run family business built from the ground up, a flamboyant celebration, a thriving competition, viewer excitement, strategic gluttony, and the ability to invest in winners and losers for profit.
While many will watch to see who wins, Joey Chestnut has become so ingrained with victory that it’s a Hail Mary to go against him, akin to betting on the Washington Generals to beat the Harlem Globetrotters or for the Mets to…never mind.
But that is unconnected to the performance itself, specifically, how many hot dogs will Chestnut eat? How many will other contenders like Patrick Bertoletti, James Webb, Crazy Legs Conti, Gideon Oji, and others eat?
Prediction markets offer options to speculate on how many hot dogs the competitors will eat in the contest. This gives the opportunity for a substantially higher profit with better odds than simply picking a winner.
Odds for Total Dogs Eaten at July 4th Hot Dog Eating Contest
Trading volume for this market is approaching $75,000 and will continue to rise until the lunch bell rings.
As expected and justified by Chestnut’s looming presence over the contest, he is the market’s primary focus. More than 90% of users think he will eat 60+. It drops to just under three-quarters, believing he will eat 65+. About half say he will get beyond 70. Approximately 30% of the market suggests he will eat 72+. For 74+, it is over 20%. With 76+, it is around 15%. After that, it drops to the mid-single digits.
Unlike the winner/loser aspect of other markets, users can weigh in on how many hot dogs and buns the individual competitors will eat. Thirty percent think Patrick Bertoletti will eat 58+. Geoffrey Esper is at just over 20% to eat 51+. It is in the mid-30s for James Webb to eat 49+. About one in three say Nick Wehry will eat 46+. The 6’9″ Gideon Oji is in the mid-teens to eat 38+.
Other competitors are also on the market for how many hot dogs they will consume.
For those who want to jump in on this market, the Kalshi referral code offers a $15 Sign-Up Bonus once $15 in trades are completed.
The rules stipulate that if the user is correct in the number of hot dogs and buns the competitor surpasses when eating in the Men’s Division of the 2026 Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, the market will resolve to Yes.
Major League Eating, Fox Sports, Nathan’s Famous, and ESPN will verify the outcome.
How Many Total Hot Dogs Will the Male Competitors Eat?
For the highest number of hot dogs and buns eaten at the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, it begins and ends with Joey Chestnut. He already has the record for most hot dogs eaten, with 76 in 2021.
If there were a competitor who was anywhere close to him, then he might be motivated to push himself beyond that limit. But there’s not. Simply going by the top 5 historic totals, it’s all Chestnut. Takeru Kobayashi is the next-closest, having eaten 64.5 in 2009. He’s not competing here. Matt Stonie ate 62 to nip Chestnut in 2015. Patrick Bertoletti at 58 in 2024 to win when Chestnut did not compete.
As for the other competitors’ totals in 2026, it’s hard to see former champ Bertoletti getting beyond 58.
Geoffrey Esper ate 53 in 2024. Aussie James Webb at 51 in 2024. Nick Wehry at 47.75 in 2024. Gideon Oji has generally been stuck in the 30s.
If Chestnut were not competing, then maybe these contestants would push themselves beyond normal boundaries. However, they know they’re probably not going to win. So they will likely tilt toward the safe side and be below the numbers available on the prediction markets.
The safest pick is to say that Chestnut will get to 70+ because he has done it many times. The weather is expected to be outrageously hot, so that could be a factor not just for Chestnut, but for every competitor. Going under across the board is the wisest strategy in part because Chestnut is the irresistible force with a consistent total of 70+ and there does not seem to be anyone to serve as an immovable object and dethrone him, nor is it worthwhile to go too far in trying.
