  • The Athletics are favorites over the Giants despite losing eight of ten to them
  • The pitching matchup heavily favors the A’s between Gage Jump vs Tyler Mahle
  • See the odds between the Athletics vs Giants and my favorite bets for their Wednesday night duel

The San Francisco Giants (32-46) welcome the Athletics (38-41) to Oracle Park for the second game of their series Wednesday night. First pitch goes at 6:45 PM PT / 9:45 PM ET from Oracle Park. You can watch this battle on NBC Sports California and NBC Sports Bay Area. San Francisco is considerable home underdogs in the MLB odds, despite winning eight of ten against the A’s.

The matchup is heavily tilted to the Athletics in the eyes of oddsmakers due to the pitching matchup that features an impressive rookie in Gage Jump against Tyler Mahle, who has really struggled on the campaign. Keep reading for my predictions for this contest, including my favorite selection in the MLB player props to wager on.

Athletics vs Giants Picks & Predictions

  • The Pick: Athletics Moneyline (-117 at DraftKings)
  • My Prop Pick: Gage Jump Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-135 at BetMGM)

When breaking down the raw metrics, Oakland holds a clear advantage on the mound and at the plate. I am confidently backing the Athletics to win this game outright. The Athletics possess a massive pitching edge with Gage Jump, while Tyler Mahle has labored heavily for San Francisco.

The Giants starter has been lit up to the tune of four or more runs in five of eight starts. That includes an outing May 15th, where the A’s scored five runs off him, where he allowed a whopping ten hits. He’s also making his first start since going on the IL with a hamstring injury in May, not giving me a ton of confidence he’ll be sharp.

The Athletics starter has gone at least five innings in all five starts, surrendering zero or one run on three occasions, with nothing worse than three in his last four outings.

For player props, my focus remains on the pitching mismatch. Jump averages slightly over six innings per start (6.07 IP/Start), giving him a long enough leash to fan five hitters. That’s something he’s been able to accomplish in four of his first five starts to his big league career.

Gage Jump vs Tyler Mahle

The MLB probable pitchers shows that the disparity on the mound heavily favors the visiting club. Jump has masterfully limited baserunners, evidenced by his 0.99 WHIP and .200 opponent batting average. His 2.47 FIP indicates his run prevention is entirely sustainable.

Conversely, Mahle has constantly pitched in traffic during his difficult campaign, before he got injured. His 1.54 WHIP and .286 opponent batting average reflect an inability to keep runners off the basepaths. A bloated walk rate and brief outings frequently force San Francisco to lean on its relief corps earlier than desired.
