Probability of shuffling a deck of cards
If you properly shuffle a standard deck of 52 cards, the order you get is almost certainly unique in the history of the universe. The number of possible arrangements is 52 factorial, written 52!. That’s 52 × 51 × 50… all the way down to 1. The result is about 80 followed by 66 zeros. It’s so huge that there aren’t enough seconds since the Big Bang to try all possible decks one by one. This example shows how quickly combinatorics explodes and why our intuition completely fails for very large numbers and probabilities.
