The Marvel Cinematic Universe had largely lost its touch following Avengers: Endgame with the apparent departures of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man and Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America. Rotten Tomatoes, the review aggregate website, is being watched closely to see how fans respond to the new film. A High Score is Guaranteed, but How High?

Even casual MCU fans are eagerly anticipating Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The fanatical fans will arrive wearing costumes, cosplaying a character in the film (expect The Punisher to be more popular than expected), and will give the film a 200 score if they can.

Because Marvel has been biding its time to get here, there has been a lull in enthusiasm with complaints and disappointing box office numbers. Some of the complaints were legitimate. Some were nitpicky. Marvel set a high bar with the quality of its storytelling, the star power it accrued, the special effects, and the money it brought in. Still, those who are unhappy need only look at the DC Universe and its slow-moving disaster hitting its nadir(?) with James Gunn’s disastrous Supergirl. If the DCU had been looking to recover from the nonsensical and convoluted Zack Snyder takes on Batman and Superman, by hiring Gunn away from Marvel, they only succeeded in creating a different level of mess.

Judge for yourself which is worse.

There are always the professional protesters who look for social media attention one way or another by, for example, saying the films aren’t “inclusive” for people who haven’t seen the previous films and are not Marvel fans.

Veteran filmmakers like Martin Scorsese roll their eyes at superhero films since they do not see these CGI- heavy efforts as real moviemaking.

For the former, it’s not a requirement to go see them — there ain’t gonna be a test.

The latter doesn’t need to like them. Sitting through The Irishman in one go was like taking a vacation to Alderaan. To each their own.

This is not veering off topic since it proves a point that few films get a Tomatometer score in the mid-to-high 90s. Even acknowledged classics of relatively recent vintage with universal acclaim like Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Godfather, The Silence of the Lambs, and Back to the Future are stuck in the low-to-mid 90s. Two of Scorsese’s (arguably) best films, Raging Bull and Goodfellas, are in the low-90s.

Succinctly, there will always be people who complain for its own sake. And there will be people who don’t like the film for whatever reason(s). Some are just contrary.

Since Spider-Man: Brand New Day will have a monster run in theaters, and fans are frothing at the mouth for the next great MCU film, it will amass a huge score on the Tomatometer. The 91 and above number has surprisingly good odds at the moment. Barring a stunning turn of events, it will certainly go beyond 91 on Rotten Tomatoes, so there is a great chance for significant profit.
