Um Gênio QUEBROU o Cassino com Matemática

Em 1961, um professor de matemática entrou num cassino de Reno com US$10 mil emprestados de um gângster. Trinta horas depois, saiu com US$21 mil — e ele nem estava “jogando”. Estava rodando um experimento.
Edward Thorp descobriu a única rachadura do cassino: no blackjack, o jogo tem memória. Ele usou um IBM 704 pra simular milhares de mãos, criou o Ten Count (a contagem de cartas) e publicou “Beat the Dealer” — 700 mil cópias, best-seller do New York Times. Os cassinos mudaram as regras só por causa dele.
Depois ele fez a pergunta que mudou tudo: qual é o maior cassino do mundo? Wall Street. Com Claude Shannon (o pai da teoria da informação), Thorp construiu o primeiro computador vestível da história — escondido no sapato. E em 1991, olhou pra um fundo “que nunca perdia”, checou o volume real das opções e cravou: é fraude. O nome do gestor? Bernie Madoff. O mundo levou mais 17 anos pra concordar.
